Pte 13194 Christopher O'Neill of 9th South Lancs Killed in Action 26/09/1915 near Caix France
buried in Caix British Cemetery in 1915 which was captured by the Germans in March 1918 but recaptured by the Canadians on 8 August 1918

The Cemetery was redesigned by Sir Herbert Baker who also designed Loos Cemetery and Tyne Cot

Sir Herbert Baker was friend to T E Lawrence and let his London Apartment to Lawrence
to write the Draft of
"Seven Pillars of Wisdom"

I was in Bootle Library yesterday (Opens Thursday & Friday for lending at present) & was surprised & delighted in equal measure to see the (hopefully) enclosed pics being proudly displayed on 6 ft boards, for all & sundry to admire of our local Heroes.

All were awarded VC medal.

Apologies for the quality of photography but they were taken in an 'espionage' manner...!!....(John Le Carre would have been proud of me).

Good job Dan you posted this Bootle Times from 1915 about the Death in Gallipoli of John James Mac Farlane as it identified as transcription error on the Bootle War Memorial site



Stating he was Pte 4834 and that he died 11 April 1918 at Gallipoli

Which is highly unlikely as all the Allies Retreated and Evacuated Gallipoli in January 1916

and 4834 in Australian Army related to another Ex Bootle Lad

Pte 4834 Wilfred Henry Johnston killed in France on 11 April 1918

Correct details are Pte 1649 John James MacFarlane of 6th Australian Imperial Force Killed 13/08/1915
Born December Quarter 1894 in West Derby District to John MacFarlane and Elizabeth McManus who married September Quarter 1893 they lived at 38 Knowsley Rd
They Baptised him 9 November 1894 at R C St James's.

His Dad died December 1907 and Buried at Kirkdale Cemetery on 27th December

December 1909 his Mother Elizabeth remarried a William Duffy and the
1911 Census shows them at 16 Hemans Rd off Bibby 's Lane

John James not on that Census probably away at Sea.

Anyway, whilst walking the dog along University Road, I espied another tribute Captain Eric Bell emblazoned on the exterior of 'The Bootle Protestant Free Church'

Pte not Rifleman 2286 George Barnes 6th King's died 9/10/1915 aged 21 Buried with CWGC Military Headstone at Suzanne Cemetery along with 156 others their Records show Rfn changed to Private and his Mother had inscribed on his Headstone

"The Men were Very Good, They were a Wall onto us, By Night and Day"

Sadly the CWGC knew nothing of his Family or Next of Kin to inform them of his Death at Gallipoli Turkey

He was Pte ? L/Cpl 10436 Herbert Cecil Robinson of 6th Btn South Lancashire Regt Aged 19 Killed 10/08/1915 ar Gallipoli

He was born June Quarter 1896 West Derby District to Joseph Bulshaw Robinson
and Jane Boyd R Biggert
Who married in West Derby District in December Quarter 1889
They had a Daughter Robina in 1892 and a Son Thomas in 1893
Herbert in 1896 was their youngest and final child.

Herbert is Commemorated on the Helles Memorial at Gallipoli Panels 140 to 141

Again the CWGC didn't know who his Parents or Widow were !

They were Parents Thomas Redmond and Bridget Redmond nee Dunne
His belongings were sent home to his Widow
Mrs Margaret Ann Redmond nee Wing of 60 Cavendish Rd off Rice Lane




His son Robert was born on 9th July 1915

Michael is Commemorated at Aveluy Cemetery and buried with 613 others of which 589 have been identified

Pte 3317 Glenny Hale 9th King's aged just 17 died per CWGC on 25/09/1915 and not 30/09/1915 per E Wyrall's History of the King's Volume I

He is Commemorated at Loos Cemetery France

2nd Lt Harry Alexander aged 36 died on 17 October 1915 with the Ist Grenadier Guards not the Coldstream Guards as reported in the Bootle Times

He left behind a Widow Louise Ward Alexander nee Risby and 12 month old Daughter Jean Alexander

Harry before the War was a Professional Singer and his Wife a Concert Pianist.

She never remarried and died in Torbay in 1986 aged 101

Harry is Commemorated at Arras Rd Cemetery Rolincourt France along with over 1,000 others

Pte 17780 James Alcock 2nd King's Own Royal Lancasters Regt aged 42 killed per Bootle Times 30/09/1915 but CWGC site list Death as 01/10/1915 and they had no details of his Family




He left a Wife Helen Frost Alcock nee Hurst and a Son Oswald aged 8 and a Daughter Winifred aged 6

Sadly in March Quarter 1919 his Wife died aged 44 leaving the 12 year old and 10 year old to be raised by Grandmother Mrs Margaret Hurst







He is Commemorated at Loos Cemetery France

Thanks Dan for allowing me to catch up on your 47 posts of Soldiers in WW1
Managed to research and add to 41 of them that died.
I found it very interesting and informative.
Never knew so many Bootle Lads were at Gallipoli in other Regts.
Such a varied assortment of Regts they all served in.
Only 22 out of 47 in the King's Liverpool Regt

Number 42 who I thought there was nothing out there.







My Dad's Mother stated on her November 1910 Marriage Certificate that she lived at 17 Harlech Street Walton.

In 1962 after watching Stanley Matthews play for Blackpool against Everton at Goodison
I ran out from behind a Parked Bus on the Corner of Harlech Street/ Carisbrooke Rd and was hit by a Car

The chap who wrote this letter to the 'Bootle Times' was killed but he mentions my grandfather, Edward Glendenning, who survived though badly wounded.

Private Patrick Mackin, of the Irish Guards, writes:- "Having been born and bred in Bootle and lived in Canal Street for over twenty-five years, and having been a reader of your paper now for many a year, I feel it is my duty to let you know how popular your paper has become in my Company. Although the vast majority of them are Irishmen, they are always waiting for the arrival of my mail, and their first question is, 'Has the Times come, Pat?' There are two of us from Bootle in this Company, the other man E. Glendenning, hailing from Knowsley-road, so you will know how eagerly we await the Bootle Times. It strongly recalls me back to glorious deeds of football in the South Park."

L/Cpl Mackin died on 11th October, 1917, aged 27.

They had a Son Terence Mackin December Quarter 1914 West Derby Vol 8b page 593 but under Mother's Maiden Name of Garraghty not Geraghty

They lived at 25 London Road Walton

Once again Bootle New Strand Library impresses with this 6ft high (I don't do metres !) tribute to the local Women from Sefton who paid the ultimate sacrifice in WW1.

I remember when Researching Lawrence of Arabia I read the Biography of his friend Seigfried Sassoon who was posted to Litherland Barracks not Seaforth
He was the Officer here in 1915 with 3rd Royal Welch Fusiliers
