This a photo of Georges paper shop on Strand Road 1958
The building on the right was the Derby Arms pub (now a day nursery), with the bus stop outside the front entrance. In the distance is the railway bridge close to the current Asda store. The Strand shopping centre is now beyond the bridge where Strand Road used to continue to Stanley Road.
On the left of the shop is Richard Proctor's Haulage yard is next door, are two entrances to Crutchley's warehouse, then Proctor's repair garage and then a terrace of houses. Beyond that is a wood yard. There was also an entrance to Crutchley's horse stables.

Correct me if I am wrong but was the Stanley Social Club at the back of the New Strand? If so, I remember when I lived in Jersey Street going there with my sister-in-law and went there with our (at the time, husbands!) wearing hot pants!! We were given dirty looks from the women (jealous, we were young and fit!) and better looks from the males!! We were the first on the scene to wear them! Our inlaws were not impressed (it was a family club) Trying to think what year that would be and a vague one would be about 1971/2? Actually only went a few times but it was a good night there.

Yes Loretta, the Stanley Social Club was at the back of the New Strand.
Have you got any photos of you wearing your hot pants when you were young and fit Loretta?

Thanks for all your comments guys.
Phil & Bob, We lived in a two-up two-down and that was it?
Yes, they were slums we used to get a bath once a week in a tin bath.
Yes, we had outside toilet with newspaper cut into small sheets with string through middle and hung on a nail on the wall. In the winter we would light full sheets of newspaper to see where we were going we had to run fast otherwise we'd get our hands burnt.
Regarding hot water, we had great big pots that would be boiled on two rings on the gas cooker to do all the washing for our clothes and bedding.
When we moved up to Netherton, we had four bedrooms two inside toilets front and back rooms great big back room to do the cooking, a copper boiler a gas poker to light the fire we thought we were in heaven.
