I don't remember the water tank, when was it removed? I ran along Southport Road many times on PE when at Hillside upper school from 80-83.

This might help you, Tom,

Twinning with Towns and Cities. Mons Sefton has been twinned with Mons in Belgium since 1964. The Twinning link with Mons began in June 1964 when the Head Teacher of Bootle Grammar School, Jean Berbiers (who was born in Belgium) encouraged the former Bootle County Borough Council to enter into a formal twinning agreement with the City of Mons. :D

Tom,I had just come home on "long leave" after spending 20 months in the 7th submarine squadron Far East Fleet when the Mons opened and was living at my mates parents house at the top of Downing Road.I saw a large crowd of people outside this new pub and walked over to see what was going on.It was the grand opening and guess who the first person I saw was. Monsieur Jean D Berbiers my old headmaster at the grammar.Thought to my self "how small he was without his cap and gown on",but he did say "hello" to me and said "I know you from somewhere" I told him my name and he said "oh I remember teaching your father and his brother French before the war when I was the junior teacher at the Boy's Grammar". Cheap bu***r never even bought me a pint :)

Nice pics of The Crescent. I was born and bred just off that roundabout (Ballantyne Grove) growing up in the 60s/70s. I remember spray-painted on a wall up an entry just off the Crescent "Tiger Bay Boot Boys" :) .Was the time when lots of troubles in NI would be copied locally. Even to the extent of petrol bombs down Linacre Lane some nights (was too young to know at the time, but was that typical sectarian copycat thing). I think the newsagent on the Crescent then was called "Mr Smiths" but could be wrong. Was 50 years or so ago...

At one time the newsagents was “Eddies”, also had a branch on Moss Lane.

Joe, I always thought that the pub on the corner of Stanley Road/Commercial Road was the Knowsley, (known locally as the Roundhouse). JJC.

John. That’s what I thought and thank you for pointing this out to me I’ve amended it, I was only posting what was printed on the photo? My fault for not checking it out. :)

I worked one summer around 1971 in the dock canteen at Canada Dock. Damned hot and my first job in the morning was to water the marmalade (I kid you not) and then to man the toaster. To be honest, I was a bit worried before starting the job because the television news programmes had painted the dockers as bad lads, baby eaters, satanists and criminals. I was pleasantly surprised to find them the 'salt of the earth'. Matey, friendly and always grateful for an extra scoop of chips before the manageress knocked it off! They were the best men and not their fault if a whisky or rum boat sprang a leak. I look back on those days with great affection but I have never seen a picture of the Canada Dock canteen - not surprising really cos it was just a prefab sort of place. I wonder if anyone can find such a thing? Or have any memories of the place itself. I'm sure no-one can remember the skinny youth who collected the dregs of rum/ tea into the battered aluminium bowl before preparing dinner - if we'd run out of gravy they got oxtail soup. If we'd run out of oxtail soup they got gravy. We'll never see those days again.
