Got the lot covered.
MDHB travelling crane. No date,
It was in the records of W.T.Glover &Co.-Trafford Park cable manufacturers. They took photos of wherever they had supplied cables and junction boxes.

The caption says it's a Dunlop Bell Road Steam Crane from the Liverpool Docks 1950's. Probably from Graces Guide.

We used to smell dad's overcoat to see if we could guess what cargo he'd been working on that day.
Got pretty good at spotting palm oil, bananas, fish meal and wood.
Never did get the hang of spotting blue asbestos.

Ken
I remembered the rum just after I posted, and molasses too.
Funnily enough, I worked for ED&F Man for a while and they traded both commodities.
Then I used to do analysis for Demerara Distillers and Main Rum, who were both based in Canning Street.
Obscuration test- evaporating 100 ml of rum in an evaporating dish over a steam bath.
Most enjoyable test ever.

Sometimes the hardest part here is trying to latch things on to the right thread.

If you're using Chrome, go in the extensions store and search for photobucket fix, there is an add on that lets you see the missing photos.

Dan, Great photos of the docks.
My Da worked as a rigger in the 50s and 60s, then as an occasional pumphouse attendant in the 70s.
Apart from miscellaneous residue smells from the cargo, he sometimes inadvertently brought home ticks, fleas - and even sizeable spiders (from the banana boats). This made the 'Banana Boat song' come alive when I was a kid in Waterworks Street and Brookhill Road, whenever it came on the radio (Rediffusion, valve or transistor, as the years went by).

Thanks Walshy (Sorry Walsh sounds far too formal).
I thought I'd found another dock picture, but on checking it's the One O'Clock Gun that stood on the Morpeth Dock on the Birkenhead side.
(LIFE magazine)
I can't recall hearing the gun in Netherton, but I do remember a siren would sound each day (late50's- early 60's?)
Anyway here's a picture of the gun- I think it's now in the Albert Dock,

There is a good excavation report for Mann Island published by Caroline Raynor and Nick Johnson in 2015.

No date, but this stood on the Mann Island site.

Dan, Another great series of photos, thanks. In the late 50s and throughout the 60s, my Da would often refer to any short, booming noise as 'the one O'clock gun' - as he had heard it so many times. This, the Altcar rifle range and the Park Street barracks practice range on Mill Lane were part of the sound track of my youth, as was slinging rope and pulleys before I could tie shoe laces, due to dad's tuition. You could be our Ambassador for Anglo Sino Relations Ken.
Walshy, your comment about bugs and the like from the docks was important for the city, because it gave rise to the School of Tropical Medicine.
Only Liverpool and London have these facilities in Britain.

I won’t be going back Dan!

As to the Rum Boats, I was down there checking plywood on a Russian and went looking for my Dad who was working a Rum Boat berthed next to my ship. The hatches were open but nothing was coming up so I went to look over the hatch my Dad was in. A sight to behold! They had cleared a square of cargo and made a small stage in the middle of the hold .
The crane hook was was down and being used as a microphone as each of the Dockers, bottle in hand, gave a turn much to the appreciation of the assembled, pissed Dockers and Crew. Ken

Looking at those maps, in the first one there is a “ Carrier Dock “
I don’t remember that and I thought I knew the Canada Dock area from my Timber days.
Any info, anyone?

Dan. Wonderful, continuing photos of the Bootle docks, especially the Gladstone construction.

I also enjoyed the Cunard poster, having worked on the steam turbine QE2 engines, at Southampton, in the 1980s.

Marine salt in my blood. Walshy.
