Hi peeps,
Could anyone tell me if you come from Hawthorne rd and crossed the canal towards st Elizabeth's on penny bridge,as soon as you get to bottom what was on your left? Opposite the church! It's now a field for footy! My brother remembers some sort of factory half built or half demolished 1970s-1980s era! Not the tannery that was Hawthorne rd side, I'm talking litherland rd side!
Thanks
Mark

Fell off an old crumpling wall there when I was 12 retrieving the ball during one of our mammoth five a side games turning into the usual Fifteen a side games - even more when the word got out. One of my mates kicked it too high and it went over the old Mellanear wall that was crumbling at the top and I broke my heel after falling down with a huge crash. I was climbing the wall thinking I was clever. Fell on to a spiked railing with my arm during descent as I fell to the ground. Got taken to hospital after the gang picked me up and shoved me into the back of the ambulance.

Bob, do you know if it had a prior history (church hall/assembly hall) prior to its use by Braby's, i can remember an inscription on a sandstone block on what was the main entrance to the building saying that this stone/foundation stone was laid/lain by Alderman?. JJC.

Does anybody know the name of the street around the corner of the Mellanear? I
remember going to visit an aunt and uncle that lived down one of the roads on
the right after you turned the corner of the Mellanear. Are those houses still there?
It's been a long time since I have been in that area.

Hi Bob - Thanks for your reply, I believe it was Lunt Road.
I remember My Aunt Nancy & Uncle Eddy had a lovely
yellow budgie that they would let out of the cage to fly
around and it would sit on your shoulder and say "Like
a cup of tea and then whistle a familiar song?" They had
a son and daughter, the daughter tragically died when she
was sixteen and they never got over it.

I am sure the bridge was chosen from a list of designs and votes decided the final choice , not sure how much local input went into the voting though ,the story of the bridge renewal and design had a lot written about it so it will be somewhere on google , the disabled and pram traffic accessability ,from what I remember had a lot to do with design so how it can now be viewed as a disaster for them is strange
Here for entertainment

the bridge is designed for multi use i see people with prams wheelchairs crossing every day without a problem it has small steps and a ramp for wheelchairs.
it is a busy access for schools on both sides so i think people would be up in arms if there was a problem :D :D
