Hi,
I was wondering if anyone here lived on Wood Avenue from 1939 to around 1950? I have family members who lived there at this time, and have heard from them how the house backed onto Walton Jail. It would be good to hear from anyone who lived in street during this time.
Thank you!

Hi BOBHAMO
Thank you very much for finding that!
That must be my grandad at number 56: James "Jas" Mack (he died before I was born). My dad lived there with his brothers and my grandma. My grandad had worked on a ship as a Barber apparently.

Ah okay thanks for explaining - knew it may be a long shot
That must be my grandma who lived there at that time. My dad went to a convent home in Widnes and not the local school unfortunately.

Thanks Guys
Finally managed to find his Mercantile Marine info::::
As you can see this is dated 1952 and the ship The Ben my Cree was owned by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company running run Liverpool to the Isle of Man (plenty of info and photos Google). It is also shown that his next ship was to be the Cheshire this was owned by the Bibby line and in the 1950's was used as an immigrant ship to Australia and rather luxurious at the time. The journey took 6/7 weeks passing through the middle east and onward to the Indian Ocean one of the highlight stops was at Colombo Sri Lanka. (photo and further info Google). Hope it helps.

Hi Bob yes just goes to show what level of service was offered even on the Isle of Man boats in those days eh?? we learn so much from these posts and we have every reason to be grateful to Mersey boats and ships in both wars don't we?
Guys the following link gives some wonderful insight into the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co and mentions the Barbers (at least one on every trip) I haven't had time to read it all but Lunar would be a nice addition to print for your family archive.

Hi just found this forum. My mum Edna ( green) Hurt, was born in 1935 and lived at 31 Wood Avenue with her mum Also Edna May, her sister Janet, her dad John, who worked at the tannery in Bootle as a fireman / stocker. Her mum worked at at the cable works and then as a barmaid in the Albion pub and the outdoor of the Albion as well. My mum remembers most of the names posted above. My mums best friend was Shirley Walker. Mum thinks she went to Marsh Lane and they lost touch. Mum says that there was regular games of rounders with the kids and Ralph Larkin hit the ball for miles. Kids used to put a rope on the lamp post as and swing on them. The kids used to go to the Walton jail wall, collect ciggy stumps and throw them over in a shoe box to the convicts. They used to play near the bridge and train tracks, mum remembers walking along the track to Stanley road and back again. Her dad was a warden in the 2nd world war. There was bombing in the area and her dad raced home as they had a air raid shelter in the garden. As her dad got there a small bomb fell in front of him forgive the spelling mum said it was an insenduary bomb, He threw sand bags on it and adverted a catastrophe. Mrs Feeley lived next door to my mum.

Hi Janet just noticed your letter we lived in 27WoodAve next door but one to your Grandmother we new your mom and her sister Janet. Your Grandparents knew my Parent when they were young before coming to Wood Ave. Your mum would know us as Myra and Sylvia Kidd. We remember everybody on Wood Ave from 1937 to 1967 when we both moved to California.
