Hi Bill. Your best mate (Billy Shacklady) was my brother in law. I married his sister Margaret. I also was in the band. A year or two older than young Billy.

I notice a Blackburn on that list Bob, we had a great uncle that lived in the cottages in Park Street close by the barracks. Ken

In the space marked is a woman hanging out the washing , she is behind the washing but if i squint then i can sort of see a priest who is looking to the right of picture , the priest face though is the side of the womans head , the woman is looking at the camera.

Array,
Someone's having a laugh here,
there will be sighting's of the Maddona next,
just think "Our Lady of Bootle",
they will be coming from all over the world
to bathe in Bootle's underground waters,
and all the shop's in Hawthorne road
will be worth a fortune,
the image of the priest that could be Father Fitzpatrick,
"shudder"..

All i know is the woman hanging the washing out is really in plain view , when the pic was first put up i took it that she was the subject of the photo and expected an explanation of whose mother or nanny it was .

To Lily, & the genies,
Genies , this post has thrown up a bit of a
mystery for me, on Bob Hammo's street guide there is
no number 55, we used to live there in number 55,
yet at number 39 there is a Lawrence Thompson,
in the past you researched me and my family,
my grandfather and his family lived in Brookhill road,
Is Lawrence Thompson any relation to them, ..
Kindest Regards Bill Tomo..
I cant understand why there is no number 55..

In the picture, opposite the washing would be almost opp the jam factory (Hamiltons), and left of that was the Army barracks, and the other side of the Jam factory (going down was a place that made the lead for pencils and no doubt other things, as a kid you would see them all over the floor near the big gates, at the end of Mill Lane facing up was the big yard and building of Claude Pawson who had the dairy on Hawthorn road in fact almost to the left of the washing on the line, Claude was the son of a big dairy farmer of Bootle a dairy farmer, Claude himself had cows in the yard in the early days, later he bought the milk wholesale and it was still bottled in the set up in the yard, all bottles were washed and refilled, later on as he was getting on he bought the milk already bottled from Hanson's. As a kid I worked for Claude 7 days a week (during summer holidays) for 2 bob a week. I met Claude last in 1966 just before I came to Australia and we had a good old chat, nice to have caught up with him. He and his wife Mary ran the shop with help for daughters Dot and Edna. (Sorry I do see some of this has been covered in earlier posts missed them) Dave.

Hi everyone (new on here) our family lived at #15 from 1965 until made to go 1972. The original sandstone was by then covered in a red /pink render. We were next door to Mrs Blackburn who still had the gas light in the front room and a bed downstairs. She would make us sugar, jam or bovril butties, and mum would go mad because her house was pretty minging (no offence any rels) the cottages faced the back of the barracks and would be impossible to get us little ones down early with the band playing. I remember the name Rachel Penrose from a florest nearby? Other names I recall, Eileen/Colin Ward, Michael Carrick from the barbers shop/house at the corner of Hawthorne Road. The Fagans who lived next door to my nan Mary Lake (#7) and a lovely lady we knew as Auntie Winnie at the other end of our block. We played on the Bombdie at the back of our houses which we got to by going down a very narrow passage, known as the squashed tomatoe! I also remember a lady with hair up in Bubbles called Hazel (Eaton?) in little Brookhill Road. I seem to remember she had a sausage dog. A girl called Ann in this road a bit older than me would let me play with her dolls in the vestibule. When the houses came under compulsory purchase and were boarded up as people moved on, we would pull up the corrugated sheets and play in them (cleaning and play hido, etc) Spotless when the demolition ball hit! My sister and I went to Christ Church and we moved to Netherton and went to St Oswalds. I have lovely memories of growing up here. Although it couldn't have been easy for our mum: No bathroom (tin bath in nans outhouse or in baby sisters bath in front of coal fire) Just one electric socket for everything. Toilet in yard and no central heating. Tiny little 2 up 2 down and couldn't use the front room. Kept as the parlour, but in truth didn't even have a real floor under the Lino (just earth! Ha) but still sad to leave. Sorry bit long winded, but the memories are flooding in eg May Day dress up, toffee chocolate logs off the cocky watchman and Williams's. Mmmm, the smell!
Ps Loretta if you see this? Yes, it's Debbie's sis Carol x pm me if you get chance?

I think my aunts and uncles went to St Monica's. My nan remarried and became Lake. I wonder if you may have known her daughter Janet Mattocks?
