1891 Census

Does anyone know if there are missing pieces to the 1891 Census? I am looking for 8 Pine Grove, Bootle residents. Patrick Conlan, Briget, Patrick Jr, James, Mary Ann and Thomas. I have looked for quite a while. They reside there in the 1901 Census, and reside on Davies Street in the 1881 Census. Anything would help, thanks.

I have the 1891 census on CD's so I looked up 8 Pine Grove and here is the family

Bridget wife age 43 Born Ireland
William son age 19 bn Ireland
Patrick son age 17 born Barrow in Furness
James son age 15 born Strangeways Manchester
Mary A dau age 11 born Liverpool South End

I looked up 8 Pine Grove in 1911, but the Conlan's not there, but they had moved to #4 Pine Grove.

I've searched the 1911 Summary Books as well as the Census, and no search brings up that info. Grrrrrrrr.

I see the son Patrick Conlan married Susannah Chancellor 1898. St James Bootle.

Susannah is the head of the household in 1911 (patrick must be at sea!).

What site are you using for the 1911?

I am using Findmypast. It is guesswork most of the time.

I am trying to find anything on the other children, they may have all married, I will have a look at the full transcript for Patrick and Bridget, to see what it says about how many children the had and how many still living.

I am using Ancestry.ca, however, I am having MUCH difficulty finding the correct Conlans in 1911 Census.

I noticed that on 1901 there is a daughter in law Annie listed born Ireland age 23, I wonder who's wife she is? Thomas and James are there but they are both single.

I think Thomas is on a ship in Kirkdale 1911, he is possibly transcribed as Thomas Conlaw age 27 born Bootle he is listed as married.

I don't have my census infront of me at the moment, however, I remember wondering if that was Susannah? Annie? But the relationships were all messed up.

It's possible it is Susannah, I wonder what happened to William?

Oh, nearly forgot, Patrick and Bridget listed as having 7 children 5 still living two died! on the 1911.

Jan, I did find a Baptism for Mary Anne, with parents Patrick and Bridget (Hughes), check it out and let me know what you think. She is listed as Maria Anna Conlan, parents are Patritini and Brigidae (Hughes). Can't figure out the church though.

I have Henry Hodges and Mary Conlan in my husband's tree.

This Mary Conlan was married at St Mary's Kirkdale in 1900 and was aged 21 living at 4 Percy Grove and the daughter of Patsey (as spelt in register) he was a joiner.

Henry was the son of Henry and in 1901 was living at 1 Dorset Street with his married sister Frances Shacklady wife of Thomas Shacklady.

Funny that on the one day I have found two different people looking for ancestors who are on my husband's tree!!!! The other one is the Curran query.

Glossy, I did find the baptism of Mary Ann I think it is the same person, there is also someone on ancestry who has this family listed in thier tree.

I think St Patrick's was the one in Toxteth, it says on the 1891 census Mary Ann born Liverpool South End (Toxteth).

James Thomas Cahill married to Sarah Ellen Williams on 14 June 1887 at St Anthony's Chapel Scotland Road. Child Ellen (Helen) born 24 November 1888. Whole family disappeared from 1891 Census. Sarah Ellen totally disappears from later Censuses. James come into the 1901 Census as James Cohill (Cahill) with a new partner and his daughter. Areas of interest are Epsom, Ascot, Kendrick Sts at various times.

Have looked for years and have had help from many people but......
Can't find the family together in 1891
Can't explain Sarah Ellen's disappearance

Lots of work has gone into this. Don't want to hide how much help has been provided. Need something new to follow. Any ideas ?

Currently you are Looking an 1891 Census for a Rigger if in Employment will be at Sea and not on the UK Census that Night.
If his Wife is Dead she won't be on the 1891 Census Either
The 2 year old Daughter could be with any In Law still Alive as their Grandchild


A Census can sometimes throw a Curved Ball because Researchers are looking for somewhere
Where People Live.

But a Census is not a Record of where Someone Lived that Night

It's and have always been a Record of where you Slept that Night Only the Night of the Census
which may not be where you would normally live!

CENSUS would normally be at Easter Time March/April period and People often travelled to Their Parents and
Grandparents for Easter and appear on theirs.

1891 Census was Sunday the night of 5th April 1891

Or if someone Died the Family may all congregate temporarily at the Home of the Relative to Organise

If Sarah Ellen Cahill died that weekend
Then James Thomas Cahill was left with a baby Ellen born December Quarter 1888 therefore aged 2 years 6 months
And as a Rigger probably away at Sea that 1891 Census Night when possibly Sarah Died somewhere with the Baby
Possibly she may have most likely been pregnant with 2nd Child.

As James remarried
And I have found his Plot in Ford Cemetery
I will ask my friend who else is in his Plot prior to him and when which may solve.
He died at 7 Pallas Street Kirkdale June 1924
