1960s New Brighton Baths. The shop sign said, 'Every morn think of Vaughan's'. Always have since then.

Hi Dan, Some great footy pictures. With regard to the 1960 Cup Final, Dave Whelan broke his leg, or was it his neck during that match.
Dave was from the Poolstock area of Wigan, and sometime in the 1960s, he opened a stall in Wigan Market Hall, selling Hairspray, soap,
deoderants etc. He then opened a Mini Supermarket on Hope Street,Wigan, near the market. He later owned JJB Sports, which expanded
to over 200 big stores throughout the UK, and at least 1 in Spain. He later owned Wigan Athletic Football Club, before, during, and after
their 8 years in the Premier League. So, back to the F.A.Cup, In 2013, Dave lifted the Cup at Wembley, when Roberto Martinez was the
manager, and 3 days later, Latics were relegated to the Championship.  Have a look on "Wigan World", a local forum, similar
to your Bootle Forum. Kind Regards, Ray Smyth. ex Jarvis Robinson Transport driver.

Cheers Ray

It was a broken leg, sustained tackling Norman Deeley of Wolves. Not one to watch on the internet. It was pretty obvious it was a break.

Had a look at Wigan World, added it to favourites. Just like Bootle Past only different.

Dan, Jimmy,I appreciated the photo of the red brick frontage Edward Wilson & Son (Engineers) on Aintree Road and the order plaque. I recall the company making specialised machinery for leather working, such as punches, cutters and embossers behind the offices of their headquarters. Older people used to tell me of a blacksmith's shop in their earlier company. As a kid, I was always inspired to walk past, and listen to, engineering companies in Bootle. In later years, I was lucky enough to work in, and look after, many machine shops. Time has moved on - and some of the old workshops I knew have computer aided design and manufacture (CADCAM) not to mention 3D printing for fast prototyping (which I've used to make bespoke metal foams and meshes for batteries). It's a long time since I was sent for a tin of elbow grease, a left handed screwdriver and more application! Walshy.

Old style bin motor looks to be a bit on the small side (no mass consumerisation back then) also recall built in hatch on people’s back entry walls - believe it was for purpose of cinder collection!

Footy stuff; photos from funeral of Fred Pickering - some names from Everton’s past - Derek Temple, Jimmy Harris, John Hurst, Graham Stuart, (don’t know who’s who) they were sent to me by bro-in-law!

Dan. More great photos, thanks. Sheelagh's comment brought back early memories of lif, in 'Little' Brookhill Road.
As a young lad, aged 3, I was surrounded by jiggers and almost everyone had a backyard in our terraced Victorian slums. Many aspects of this time have stuck in my mind. Just two lessons of a lifetime, from Bootle, follow.
a) On a fine day, people would bring carpets and rugs out into the yard, haul them over a stout washing line, then beat them vigorously, to remove dust. When the sun was shining, remaining dust in the air would reveal sunbeams and, on occasions, a pale rainbow. I wondered for some years what the interaction between dust particles and sunrays was. As a young teenager at Bootle Grammar School, Netherton, such things became clearer in Physics lessons, as we were taught light scattering by Peter Jones. Much later, I lectured on physics to many science and engineering students but never forgot my early introduction to light scattering.
b) In the jigger, each house had a doorway to their previous rubbish site in the yard, the midden. Typically, such middens, which had taken residue cinders from coal/wood fires, had been bricked up - but spider webs around them were common. In the sunlight and occasional breeze from the River, the webs would dance playfully, despite the lack of music. I mentioned this to my Grandma, who always referred to this effect as an example of ‘fairies on the midden door’. My young imagination was fired and I sat down to write a children’s story about fairies in backyards. Nearly 30 years later, I told the story to my kids and, recently, to grandkids. It’s hard for them to relate to backyards/jiggers and my colourful upbringing in Brookhill Road but I have shown them photos from this site.

Because of the 1881 Dock Estate print, I've been checking out lithography. I found this.

Blake and MacKenzie,College Lane, Liverpool.

Sometimes it's just a phrase or sentence that hits home.
In 1891 Blake and MacKenzie were regarded as enlightened employers because, from around 1870, they'd stipulated their workforce need work only a 51 hour week. Some time this week I'll also be posting extracts from a 1909 Royal Commission report on Child Labour concerning the employment of 10-15 year old boys in industry.

It's good to see development happening on Merseyside, but sometimes it's informative to look further afield.
