This picture is of mv Finnfighter unloading the first ever shipment of Southern Yellow Pine Plywood in Dublin.
Most of that cargo later came to Bootle and was unloaded in the Langton.
I’m the big one in the middle. I’d bought it sold it and chartered the ship, the Wood came from International Paper Co mills in
Arkansas, USA.

That shipment was 2200 packs of plywood weighing approx 3000mt.
Value in 1987 was about USD$750,000 landed in Dublin Harbour.
Figures from my pal in Dallas ( who obviously has too much time on his hands ) :D Ken

Cheaper sources today Phil, Brazil in the main and actually with containers the sea freight is cheaper. As it was sold in USD$ the Sterling exchange rate was much better then which made it cheaper than today. Rough guesstimate it’s about 15 - 20% more today but the boys tell me they make much less money on it than in my day  K

The old ones are still funny.

A foreign guy asks a dock copper "Where is the urinal?".

Copper takes his helmet off, scratches his head and says "How many funnels has it got?".

There was an interesting programme on Channel 5 last night about the construction and early operation of QE2.
Worth a look on Catch Up. K

I've recorded that cus.
I've always thought Liverpool would do well to buy an old cruise liner and turn it into a tourist attraction/hotel, bit like the old Queen Mary in the States.

She looked pretty grim in Dubai Harbour Cus. We drove quite close to her about 4 times and she looked pretty shabby, big shame.
Where would you put her in Liverpool? You couldn’t tie up a cruise berth down town.
I think it would need to be North , Bootle way but would she get through the locks and if she could , would the surroundings appeal to visitors? I wonder ? Ken

Cunard has no cruise ships....just ocean going liners that are a mode of transport.

Their great publicity gets them top ratings and mouth watering reviews from passengers, particularly Brits. and mainly southerners by birth..

I have often thought of trying these ships but shied away after being reminded of the intensive class distinction and the pay for everything facility. $10 dollars to use earphones on the treadmills in the gym or at least $5 for the sail away drink..

I have heard many tales of the class distinction shown on Cunard, for instance being asked by other passengers what class you are in or having to leave the elevator as you have reached the limit of the 'class' you are in. I have friends who have tried it and have resorted to dining buffet style to avoid snobbery, even though they themselves were in the higher class accommodation.

One look at the method of booking seems to support this criticism as the type of cabin and price you pay will distinguish what dining room you might aspire to.

I book the cheapest cabin but enjoy the same facilities as anyone else and never, ever, in over 40 cruises, have I been asked what level I am. My final account after a full world cruise aboard Crystal Serenity was $25,
