"just a few miles from their homes in North Liverpool" ?????

Hmm, all 4 were from the south end; perhaps it was Allerton golf course where they may have caddied???

Hi, does anyone know when New Park Farm was built? I can find maps from 1845 with it not on it and then 1891 when it is, any history much appreciated.

Want to know as I live in the old farmhouse now and want to know more about it.

Until the early 1950's Sefton, Aintree and Netherton came under the West Lancashire Rural District.

The proposal to absorb the three districts into Bootle was reported in November 18 1949, shown below.

Image

Any information about the building of New Park Farm would be in the West Lancashire records.

Some time I will have to post on the farms in the area in the 1850.

Glover's Lane was Harrison's Lane. Glover's Farm was a small holding on the Netherton side of Fleetwood's Bridge.

Sefton Moss Lane/Boundary Road was Blindpool Lane.

Hatton Hill and Sterrix Lane were linked by a footpath.

Won't go into the details, but the 1836 Tithe Commutation Act required mapping of fields where tithes (10% of produce )

were payable to the church or landowner. The tithes were to be replaced by rent, so fields were mapped and the rent due from each apportioned.

The plots were numbered to allow for tracking through the system

Image

As a guide, the canal starts on the left just after the words Sterrix Lane.

I think New Park Farm was bounded by Moss Lane (now Swifts Lane), Harrison Lane (now Glovers Lane) , Bridge Lane (unlabelled but easy to spot).

The western boundary would follow the dotted line, which runs in a line from Moss Lane to Harrison Lane.

I've edited the map to highlight the New Park Farm plots. See below.

Image

The main map magnifies well and you can make out all the field names.

When you get used to it , you can make out the area that was to become Bootle Golf Course.

Lots of fresh water ponds in the area.

I have recently developed an obsession with the maps and buildings of the area when Bootle, Linacre, Orrell, Litherland, Walton, Kirkdale etc were all small hamlets surrounded by countryside, particularly with where I live in Netherton being marked on many maps as "Stand Park", which New Park farm was built just outside of.

I would love to hear any more history on the local farms in the area, always fascinates me to think what it may have been like in the building 200 years earlier when I'm in the Netherton dentist, or when passing the two houses on Browns lane that were the only buildings nearby on maps from 1850 :)

Also nearby was Parkside Farm, Deerbarn Farm, Copy Farm, Glovers Farm, Edge Farm, Brook House Farm just to name a few, the names often seem to change with the years. Stand Park Farm was still on maps from the 60's off Bridle rd where Hy-Ten's warehouse is now.

Photo of the area in 1952 prior to the post-war council house building project.

The broad white stripe across the photo is a marking on the photographic plate.

From the houses, you can make out Fleetwoods Lane. Browns Lane, Park Lane West and Bridle Road.

The rest is fun.

Bern, Dunnings Bridge Rd is running parallel to the white line. The Roundabout to the right is the junction with Park Ln. The big factory middle left is the English Electic.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Keith.

I suspected that was the case but was unsure as it all looks so different 'unpopulated'.

Cheers

Told you it was fun Bern,

The new build in the upper left, running at 45 degrees, is Netherton Moss school. It opened October 1951.

To the left of Netherton Moss, on the golf course, is the WWII gun emplacement.

I think the isolated building on Browns Lane, to the left of the semis, is the old St Oswald's Church hall.

It was a large wooden building with pebble dashed panels and a stubby chimney/vent shaft on top,

Used to go there with my mum to pick up big tins of milk powder and bottles of orange juice,

Would have been about 1957/58.

This might jog a few memories.

Fair to say that Bootle golf course is one of the few mentioned in a futuristic sci-fi epic.

From Red Dwarf Series 3 Episode 2. Aired November 21 1989.

Rimmer : So, c'mon, how did you lose yours?

Lister : Michelle Fisher, the ninth hole of the Bootle Municipal golf course. Par 4, dobbing to the right, in the bunker behind the green.

Rimmer : You lost your virginity on a golf course. How'd you have the nerve?

Lister : It wasn't in the middle of the Ryder Cup or anything. It was midnight.

Rimmer : How old were you?

Lister : She was so good looking. If she wanted, then she could've got a job working behind the perfume counter at Lewis'. That's how gorgeous she was.

Rimmer : How old were you?

Lister : She took all her clothes off and stood there in front of me completely naked. I was so excited I nearly dropped my skateboard.

Rimmer : Skateboard. How old were you?

Lister : Twelve.

Rimmer : TWELVE? Twelve years old? You lost your virginity when you were twelve?

Lister : Yeah.

Rimmer : Twelve? You can't have been a full member of the golf club then.

The definition of "fit".

"If she wanted, then she could've got a job working behind the perfume counter at Lewis'." :)

2 or 3 fields above that is Ford Cemetery.

Canal running down the right.

Well done that man.

I'm happy to say I'm in that same exclusive bunch as I managed to ace the first at 'Royal' Bootle, one September morn in 2000.

Must try to dig out cutting from the Echo golf column.
