Joe, Is this picture of the horse tram taken at the top of the floating roadway ??.
If it is, then it would explain why the tram had three horses, because when the
tide was out, the roadway back up to the Dock Road was very steep.
Take care and keep safe Joe, Best regards, Ray.

Joe...Another great picture of the floating roadway. I assume that this picture is at a later date than the previous one.
At the rear of this picture is the Liverpool Overhead Railway, whereas it doesn't appear in the other one. Also, the steel
tramlines are not there, and the lane dividing rails are different. Is there a thread on here showing Liverpool trams ??.

Keep safe and take care, Best regards, Ray.

Hi Joe, I think that I have been " Barking up the wrong tree " regarding the location of the horse tram.
I found a picture on page 8 of this thread, which shows roughly the same place, but at a different time.
The red and white stone building at the rear, which I believe was the HQ of the White Star Line brings
me to think that I the trams never did go up and down the floating roadway. What I have sussed out is
the probable reason for the third horse that is leading the main pair. There were many tram routes which
started their journeys at the Pier Head, and all of them had a gradient to climb once across the Dock Road,
Chapel Street, Water Street, and James Street, so a " Team Horse " would be connected to the front of the
pair, and get the tram to the top of these 3 steep streets, and be brought back down to do it all again for
the next departure.

Cheers, Ray.
