The picture of St Lenards, the middle of the picture where a paper label is attatched to the bench,the third boy in, looks very like Ian Abbernethey,who i went to Gray st with,in the early 60s

Corner Bibby's Lane and Peel Road.

Strand Road 1950's, remnant's of Wartime still remain, as when public placenames were removed or painted over!
Looking towards Stanley Road end!

Nicolas, a great picture just by the roundabout by the stand and by new Asda think there was a shop to the left and a garage.
They built them bridges to last in them days use to see the painter painting them maybe Bobhamo's Crew.

Shops opposite Kirkdale train station

Never seen thst ine before, took me a minute to recognise where it was Thanks for posting.

Hi Joe Sheila recognised that within a second.Shops on the corner of Melrose Road .She says one was an Off Licence
and next door was a paper shop,she cannot remember the rest of them.She used to live just up the road a few houses away from
The Kirkdale Homes at 307 Westminster Road.

Not sure about that.

I thought the pic was taken from Melrose looking at Selwyn Street so Kirkdale Station would be to the left.
If we were looking at Melrose the Melrose Abbey pub would be on the corner.
If I'm right you can make out the Peacock Pub on the left as you head towards Hawthorne Road towards Bootle.

We use that road often when coming and going to the tunnels; you are correct with angle from which the pic was taken.

Surely that is Brewster St to the right, Selwyn Street is a few hundred yards up on the right where the old Princess cinema stood

Westminster Road (the main part of it) is off to the right of where the pic's taken from. That road off to the left is also Westminster for a little bit before it becomes Hawthorne.

Spot on. For some reason I had my wires crossed thinking that Selwyn Street started at Westminster Road and then veered right by the Princess, which is where Brewster Street started but you are 100% correct.

The main part of Westminster is just to the right of where the pic was taken from but that road to the left is also Westminster for a short while before it changes to Hawthorne.

Google maps suggests you're right but, so far up that street (Brewster or Selwyn whatever it is), opposite where we know Selwyn Street deffo is (by Princess) there is a street sign that says Selwyn Street while the next house up (across the entry) has one for Brewster Street. That makes me think Selwyn starts at Westminster and veers right at the Princess which is where Brewster starts.

Just zoomed in on that pic Keith and the house to the right of the entry is number 1 (Brewster?), with the one to its left number 27 (Selwyn?).

Well I never Bern I do recall seeing those two street name plates either side of the alley. does seem a bit odd though.

Hi ,f you guys want to argue with my dear Sheila go right ahead but I have to warn you
for a little 'un he packs a wicked left hook especially when she knows she is correct.
Is it not because Selwyn St .was in Kirkdale and Brewster in Bootle?
The photo looks to be quite old with tram lines still showing going down Melrose Rd.
Also the Princess Cinema did not open until 1931 Sheila's best friend parents owned it from around 1948
She never had to queue up for the Saturday Matinee and even got to sit upstairs

Brewster st modern day goes to bedford road
but before southport road opened it was only the corner shop and about the first 20 houses
if you draw a line from rosilind street a cross hawthorne road to brewster street
that was the border

Had to know you would have the answer. Do you think having the Prinny built across the road
had anything to do with the street names changing so abruptly
A long time ago we went back to Westminster Road so as we could see where I first asked Sheila for a date(she was 17)
and where she used to live.Poor lady got quite emotional when we saw that those houses and the Kirkdale Homes were no
there.It was Sheila's granddads house(307) and Sheila's mum was brought up there but born in one of
the pubs that were run by John(Black Jack)Lynch her father.

I used to work in Nixon’s tongue factory in Grist Street, it was straight across tram lines then first left on Westminster Rd in the early 1960s.
