Linacre Council School Admission Registers

Had a really good trip to Bootle Monday last. Met my 82 year old aunty, took her to the Marine pub in Seaforth – her recommendation. Service good and cheerful – food really nice. Recommended, I’d go again. Then to Linacre School where I’d fixed up with Mr. Gillespie to look at the school records (all this because of postings by Bobhamo and Daveowe). While I looked through them, Mr. Gillespie gave my aunty a conducted tour as she’d never been back since 1939! He made photocopies of about fifteen pages of the various admission registers I went through where I’d found my mother, father and various other relatives.
Below, in no order, is a sample of what is in the some of the Infant and Junior registers – these are what I’ve abstracted from them about my family. I didn’t have time to look at other records so I’ll have to make another visit to see the log books, odd photos, punishment book and so on while I’m back in England. I’m wondering if anyone would be interested if I were to type out some of the names listed on the pages I had photocopied and post them here?. It's been done before I think? Then if any name resonates, just contact me and I'll give all the details for the name you might be interested in. It won’t be quick and it will be very sporadic and I may never finish…. but at the moment I have some time…..see below for examples of what information there is.

Good to hear that you have found so much useful information with the help of Mr.Gillespie.

When I met with him last year, I think, he found so much information for me on my Dad, his sisters, my brother and myself, who all attending the school.

He really is an asset to the school.

Thanks for replies Bobhamo and Glenys. Just had a letter from the aunty - she was particularly struck by being shown the key cupboard. Apparently a child would be given a key by the teacher and told to "post" it in the key cupboard.

Hi Ken

Interesting having the birth dates on the admission records. I wonder if your photocopies have Ivy Emma Simpson or Joyce Simpson on them.
Ivy was born 1928 and was a pupil there when she died in 1934. Joyce was older but I don't have her date of birth.

I don't know if either of these are any good - they are not the two names you mention but related maybe - though Simpson is common enough (Roberts and Taylor are worse). They are the only Simpsons on the haphazard collection of photocopies I have.

Hi Ken ,thank you.The Wethered named in 1933 should be Mary Dorothy Currie Wethered and was my dads sister.The Currie part comes in because of the Scotish connection in our family and taking a relatives surname as a second Christian name .My grans name was Annie Smith but their family had been brought up by a family called Currie from the Isle Of Arran after my great grandad abandoned his family during the early 1900,s.
There is a weird coincidence about her birthdate my daughter was born on 6th october,two of my aunt Mary's cousins were born on 6th october and three of her second cousins were also born on that date.Great Christmas parties!!!!

I'm sure you'll have it Matt but if not - the rest of your dad's sister's details are:

Her last school: Infants department
Date of last attendance:- 24.4.1934

There is also one other entry to do with her. It's a date 7.7.1934 with a note under- Cause of Leaving which says:- Scholarship to Sec. Sch.

Thank's for the rest of it Ken,wonder what sec.sch.she went to as she was'nt even 9 according to those dates.She did go to bootle girls grammar school but that would not have been for a couple of years later.Interesting my grandparents address at 74 Thornton Road.My grans youngest sister Lena Blyde lived in #68 and during the blitz 74 was hit but not one bit of damage at 68 three doors down and in fact my dads cousin Andy(Angus) lived in 68 until about 2001.I would love to ask all kinds of questions about my family but my aunt Mary was the last one left that knew all our Wethered family history and she passed away in either 1996 or 7.Thank you again Ken for all your hard work,now if you want to do something with Grey street school,that's where my dad Sidney and his older brother John went to!!!!!

I knew Angus very well he was a very sociable person, in my younger days I hung around with his neighbour at 76 Thornton Rd. The corner house which had been bombed had a prefab on the site for many years. When I returned to the Uk I used to frequent the Punch Bowl in Sefton, Angus called in there every Saturday night. In his later years he was in a wheelchair and in Residential Care.

Well fancy that Daveowe,we have more than likely been introduced to each other if that was in the early 60's.When I was home on leave we used to go to the Punch Bowl a lot with each other for a game of dominoes and to show off my latest girlfriend to him(actually to get his stamp of approval)He was 2 years younger than my dad but he was my favorite (second)cousin.The family always used to ask him when he was going to get married and his reply was always the same"what harm have I ever done to you".Are you the Dave that used to work on the docks?He had a friend called David that was interviewed for a record that was being made to celebrate the opening of the new section of the Mersey Tunnel and the record featured all kinds of people from Liverpool ;Jacquie and Bridie,Pete McGovern,Stan Kelly,Ken Dodd,Fritz Spiegl(lern yerself scouse) etc, and this man was a wealth of knowledge about the docks and knew all the nicknames the dockers used to call each other.

I have been looking through this post and think I have found a reference to my Great Auntie. She is listed in the list showing up to 1929 admissions and is Joan Allan. I have attached a copy of the list and its reference. Is there still the option to get more information on that record at all?

Sorry Allan,
I no longer have the copies I made all those years ago. Last year I moved house, downsizing after being in the same house for 43 yrs and never threw anything away but had to this time. I'd had no queries in years about the records so thought it was no longer useful.

I am sure Mr. Gillespie is long gone and I do not know if the school itself would still be as welcoming as it used to be - I'm sure the staff will have changed substantially.

hi ,I went to the school about three maybe four years ago - because somebody mentioned to me what a fantastic set of records they held there; a couple of the teachers were interested in having them stored properly, I approached Writing on the Wall and the Museum but I don't know if anything came of it.The school was very welcoming though and was very proud of the artwork their students had done which now hangs on the railings at bootle Oriel Road Station. it would be very good if these admission books which go back to when the school was first opened in 1905 were to have a proper public home.
