Hi
I am trying to find my grandmother Ellen Ryan(Andersen) in the 1939 register.
She was living in 91 Brasenose Rd
She doesn’t seem to appear on the register at all for some reason
Is it possible to look via an address on the register?
Cheers

I can see Ellen Ryan there in the directory at 91 Brasenose rd. what yr is that directory from?
I’ve been onto the 1939 register and can’t find Ellen Ryan at all.
Very frustrating
I think she lived there until the mid 50’s
She then came and lived with us in Stanley rd Kirkdale for a while. She then went into a hospice and passed away shortly afterwards.
I’m just trying to find out who she lived with in 1939
My mum Mary Fletcher was married in 1937 and left to live in 115 Benadict St and was bombed out !!
Thanks for your help

I presume you searched Register under her Date of Birth ?
Which is never a good idea.
In my experience the Date of Birth on the Register are only 60% correct which doesn't help.
Her's shown as 15 June 1894 Widow

That is really great Thank you so much
Her date of birth is wrong on the register as she was born in 1874 not 94!! That’s why I couldn’t find her!!
The Peter Andersen living with her is her son who tragically was killed in 1948 in an accident in the docks where he worked. Her other son Thomas was killed at sea during the war in 1942
My grandmother died in 1955 in a hospice in Old Swan
Did you search the register by name or address
Thank you so much for the information

Just Searched for Address
As I knew from Experience using a Date of Birth was a Waste of Time and also names.
Searched just Brasenose, Bootle
It found every number
Just went forward to page showing number 91 there were Two entries for 91 implying there were Two separate Families
Her and her Son Peter
And William and Mary Cross possibly Lodgers or Relatives?
Re the 1938 Gore's Street Directory Bob found
When researching you always have to remember it's not always factually correct.
That Directory was printed as Representing 1938 in 1938 was information collected in 1937 to be collated and sent to Printers 1938
Usually Voters Qualifying date example would be at an address say in October 1937 sent to Printers early 1938 to vote in May 1938 elections
But if say someone died in December 1937 the 1938 Voters list would wrongly show that person alive in 1938

Thanks for trying for me
I keep hitting a blank too
I even went to Elstow St and it’s the only street up to Lambeth Rd that has gone now
Very frustrating
It’s just that he died in that house and his sister Mary of Brook Rd Bootle was present at the death and is named on his certificate .
Thanks again
I really appreciate your effort

If a Street was Cobbled and Not Tarmacced by the Council it was Unadopted and Gore's Directory Did Not list Unadopted Streets in their Directories.
Best option is Voters Lists for that Address to find Head of Household or Census Records 1891 1901
