Please Help me trace a family member....

Postby diatoms » Mon Oct 22, 2018 11:16 am

Hi there.

Please could anyone help with this request if possible - any information would be really gratefully received.

I am trying to trace a family member.

All I know was that he was definitely a Butcher in Bootle, I know he traded in the 1950's, I have been told the shop was on or near Stanley road. He used to have people take meat down to the docks to ?sell. Apparently he was very well liked and known. I am also told he was a 'larger than life' character??

He was called James Christopher Braithwaite or commonly known as 'Bunny' Braithwaite. I have seen a couple of postings that mentioned him, but I nothing else.

I would be VERY grateful if anyone on here has ANY information about him - is he still alive? did he carry on as a Butcher? where did he live and where does he live now - if possible. Did he have any children?

Many thanks for your help

Thank you BobHamo :) I tried to find the place on the google map but proved a wee bit difficult....

Thomas Braithwaite - I think he may have been a cousin. As far as I can see at the moment, JC Braithwaite came from a Christopher Braithwaite who had a brother. However, Braithwaite appears to be a VERY popular name, particular to the Northern area; apparently it came from Ireland and from there went to America; I have also been informed that there is a high rate of Huntington Chorea within the name - I found that the surname was apparently attached to the first Huntington Chorea person in America, however, whether this is facts would need mahooooosive investigation and should therefore not really be labelled. My Great Grandfather, Christopher Braithwaite, married a Crawford where Huntington Chorea was also in the family line.

Hunting Chorea is a progressive Disease of the Brain affecting the Neural functions giving uncontrolled movements and uncontrolled emotions - it is not nice. Back the days, folk were classed as 'witches', 'possessed by the Devil, loonies, insane..the list is endless. They were either cast out, burnt at the stake, or put into assylms.

I need to look into the Thomas Braithwaite maybe later when I have more time, but atm I need to find out more about JCB (JC Braithewaite).

If yourself or anyone else you know of, or on here has any information - it would be very gratefully received :)

Thank you.

Jeepers - you guys are amazing!!!

However.... one part I have a problem with is James Christopher's marriage. I have the names of 'his' 3 girls and his wife - a Joan Brewis married in 1952, the information came from an Uncle before he died.

I tried to post up a word doc but it wont allow to - shame as you could have seen what I have, the information you have given me and what I am missing.

Bob - do you know who Christopher the dairy man was married too? He would be my G G Grandmother!

Thank you :)

Hi Diatoms,

Do you have a copy of James's marriage certificate? it may be a case of obtaining copies of both that have been found to confirm the father's name and occupation to get the correct spouse and any children.

I think Christopher Braithwaite (the cow keeper) born Yorkshire married in Yorkshire, it has on the 1911 census they had been married for 34 years. This could be the marriage registration.

I was right about Christopher's marriage to Mary Jane Runder.

I checked the GRO birth registrations (historical) which give mother's maiden name

Mother's Maiden Surname:

How do you find all the information? All I have is the BMD free search site which is how I have managed so far and then I got stuck...

What is GRO?

Bob mentioned:
John G Braithwaite Son M 1 Liverpool, Lancashire, England - who is this the son of????
John Riewcler Brother M 43 Melmerely, Yorkshire, England - who is Riewcler? I cant find any name on the BMD???

Are you geneiologists????

When I am not working, I spend my time trying to do this, but work is taking over more and more...sadly

Bob - Very many thanks :)

Where do you find the information? I have BMD search and that's it - it takes ages and needs checking and rechecking etc etc....

It is really interesting as my Mum has often siad how she feels that Yorkshire/Northumberland feels like she is coming into her home area every time she drives through...

So how do I find out about Crawford who are also in the Liverpool/Bootle area??

Hi Diatoms,

There are quite a few websites that we use for tracing family history, some are free but others you have to pay a sub to view the records.

Mack did put a link on here somewhere on what websites to use, but I can't find it now. I have been researching family history for about 15 years, so have learned a great deal over time. We can help you with the Crawford side of the family, if you go back to the marriage certificate I put on for Christopher Mathew Braithwaite to Margaret Bertha Mason Crawford, you will see that their father's are named and their occupations. So going back in time through census records which can be viewed on ancestry.co.uk (a sub is needed) or findmypast,co.uk (also a sub is needed) but you can get free 14 day trials to use the sites, but you MUST cancel before the time is up, or you will be charged.

There is also familysearch.org where I found the Crawford family in 1911 census, the address was 100 Rathbone Road, Wavertree

Hugh Crawford is Margaret Bertha Mason Crawford's father, where it gives birthplace as Kendal Nottingham, that is a mistake it is Kendal Westmorland. Hugh Crawford was born Ayreshire Scotland.

If you would like to go further back with the Crawford line, we can search for them in census. There quite a few of us Genealogists on the site that will help you. If you would like to obtain any copies of birth marriage or death certificates (£9.25 each) we will point you in the right direction on how to order the from the GRO (General Registry Office) Here is their website https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ you will need to register, but that is free.

Hope you all had a great weekend in the sun :)

I have joined the GRO. However, it only seems to do Births and Deaths. What happens when you dont know the persons birth surname, and you want to see if they were the correct person who married Hugh Crawford so you see when they died etc.... How do you find out the marriages on it also?

Many thanks :)

A search of the GRO Birth Index Search online facility shows :

There was also another child of the Marriage =
James Campbell Crawford. Born Jun 1886 West Derby Vol 8b page 612 Mother = Lawrence
but died aged 0 Dec 1886 West Derby Vol 8b page 427
Not sure how many the 1911 Census stated there were of the marriage and how many died , but could only find these 1880 to 1917
Hope this helps ?

I have Crawfords in my Ancestry Tree also.

One was registered at Birth as Luke OIL Crawford his Mother unable to read or write tried to register the child per her Husbands Christian names which included his Mother's Maiden Name .

Hi Alamo2008

Many thanks for the information. I had seen there was a James Campbell, wrote it on the tree but then took it off as it didnt appear again so I thought it may've been a mistake. The Mason bit - Many thanks, it was rattling my brains a bit - I thought maybe the Father was a stone mason (many tradesmen used their trade as their surname - handy really :) ), there was Crawford stone mason in Liverpool roughly at a similar time, but it just 'feel' right as it were...

I have got to Hugh Crawford's (married Isabella) Father and am stuck. Hugh's parents were William and Mary Crawford from Scotland. There are WAY too many William's and Hugh's..........

Which Crawford's were your side???
