Cheers,
I believe I need a Discharge number but don't know how to go about it.
I've got his enrolment number.
As he was killed at sea, torpedoed,I think it's right somebody from our family should receive it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Also it it possible to get a death certificate ?
Ron

Hi Lily,
Thank you so much for your information.
I was stumped as I couldn't find his discharge number. It will be a pity if his medals have been lost. They would have been issued to his mother,my grandmother,Ellen Ryan(Andersen).
I will consider ordering copies of them for posterity,I feel it's the least I can do.

Thank you

Hi again Ron the sad part about mercantile marine medals is that they were not issued but had to be applied for so Granny must have requested them. You should be able to get replicas I Will email the pdf doc

It's strange that he was awarded the Italy Star,Pacific Star and the War Medal but was operating in the Atlantic when his ship was sank and he lost his life.

Hi Ron,
You may be able to get a death certificate, but it may involve a trip to Kew.
This site might help

Sorry Ron without further docs I can't really comment other than to say entitlement was based on length of service in each theatre (see guidelines posted prior) can only hazard a guess and speculate that his time was spent mainly in the Med and Pacific and perhaps only short run/runs in the Atlantic.ronfletcher wrote:It's strange that he was awarded the Italy Star,Pacific Star and the War Medal but was operating in the Atlantic when his ship was sank and he lost his life.

That's sad when you read it isn't it.
I am still trying to find his sea faring records,I think it's really sad he died in the Atlantic and never received recognition.
Thanks again so much for all your efforts.

There is now a picture emerging of my grandmother Ellen Ryan(Andersen) living in 91 Brasenose Rd,my mum married in 1937,her sister Margaret had already married,Thomas had moved out and gone to sea at 14/15 yrs of age,the other brother Peter Andrew was killed in an accident on the docks,so she was then living alone.
She had a tough life, her 2nd husband was Patrick Ryan was killed in WW1 at sea also.

Well done Jan
Looking at this again I would think the medals would have been claimed by his wife Phyllis as NOK and are possibly still held within the family. A check of birth records show two possible births Stanley Anderson born 1933 and Joyce Anderson born 1936 mothers maiden name Johns both registered in West Derby which fits. The 1939 register shows 2 redacted persons with Phyllis (and her Brother and an older woman perhaps her mother) which are possibly her children. Without birth documents just a reasoned supposition, but I would like to think that his son or daughter held the medals and remembered their father with pride.
Reading what you have written about your Granny, it must have been heart breaking to lose so many family in so short a period the woman in those days had to bear it and get on with it as best they could. Remarkable women they certainly were.

That is very interesting
My grandmother died in 1955 in a home in Old Swan.
I was 5 yrs old and remember it.She had a fall on Stanley Rd and came to live with us briefly, she couldn't get up the stairs so my dad would carry her up,it eventually got too much for my parents to cope, five children in our house,I was the youngest!
The coffin was brought back to our house in the living room.
I was rerrified of the coffin as I was so young, she was layed to rest in Ford cemetery.
I have the bill for her funeral!
I am surprised Thomas was married as I couldn't find any record and haven't heard of his in laws.
This is another chapter in a very interesting life
Thank you again so much

Ron,
I was trying to find Ellen's marriage to Christian Andersen (Anderson) but it turned out she married under the name of Nellie (nee McEvoy) St John's Bootle, Here is the marriage cert for you.
Sorry the image is missing a bit off the end, Christopher's father was a carpenter and Nellie (Ellen) father was a carter.

Thanks again,
I do have that wedding cert,It's confusing as both names are spelt differently!! But I believe it is correct.Peter McEvoy is her father.Owen McEvoy is her grandfather.
I am going to obtain the wedding cert from Thomas L Andersen in 1930,it should have a bit more info on it hopefully!
I didn't know he had married.Im also going to look into his Merchant Navy career.
Thank you so much,
You people are amazing !!

It's amazing the number of Ryan's who crop up!
Ellen father Peter married Elizabeth Ryan
Ellen Andersen (McEvoy) married Patrick Ryan
Now Annie Ryan pops up.
Peter McEvoy died in a house in Elstow st,There are a number of Ryan's living in that street in 1939!
The plot thickens,The Ryan family were obviously close !!
Thanks again for your digging around.
