Bootle Technical College (Commercial) for Girls

Postby CONNELL » Sat Nov 05, 2016 12:17 pm

Did anyone out there attend the girls Technical College on Balliol Road, opposite the boys college, in 1959-60. It was the first year this section was open for girls from local Secondary Modern schools and we studied shorthand, typing, bookeeping, commerce. Male teachers came from the boys technical college and gave us lessons in French and Algebra - unsuccessfully. Our mistress was Miss Vipond. I was there with my friend Mary Dove, both of us from St Monicas and I can remember Olive Much and Rosina Anderson.

I started here in 1965 after you but Miss Vipond was still teaching shorthand and typing.
She would say to the girls that we would always be required above an audio typist because a boss would rather have a nice girl sitting on his knee. OUCH!!!!

I went there Sept 61 to June 62. Loved it, great foundation for good business career. Mr Keppell was the Principal. Miss Vipond taught us Book-Keeping and was a wonderful advisor. Friday mornings Fiona Simpson (professional model) taught Etiquette and how to dress (must have in your handbag an extra pair stockings and gloves) and we had Ballroom Dancing friday afternoons - good secretaries had to have good manners and must be able to dance. I was one of four or five girls from The Countess of Derby.

One of the many things I remember Miss Vipond teaching us was when leaving our desk, if only for a visit to the toilet, we must always leave a note on our typewriter saying where we were! When I did this at one of my first jobs, the office staff fell about laughing. She was a lovely lady, if rather old fashioned.
In that first year, it was decided that we should 'socialise' with the boys at the technical college across the road and a meeting was held to discuss ideas. One lunch hour, we all went across the road, supposedly to dance with the boys, under supervision. I can recall how excruciatingly embrassing it was with the boys staying on one side of the hall and the girls on the other. I don't recall anyone actually getting togoether and definitely not dancing. How times change. We did start up a card club, playing in the evenings, but that was banned when the caretaker caught us playing for money.
