Hi
I havent been on the forum for a long time, but I really need some help in finding some information about my great grandfather. His name was George William Emerson, and as far as I know he was born in the USA in 1877 and in 1901 he got married to a Margaret Macnaulty in Bootle. I know all about him after he married my great grandmother, but nothing before that. I have searched everywhere, got in touch with lots of family members ( even found some) and all they could tell me was he worked on the ships as a musician. I have looked at shipping lines etc, but nothing. Im getting desparate know, as my Mum would love to know some more about him. The only other thing that i know is that his father was called William. Any help/advice would be most appreciated. Thank you !

Further:

No record of him at Ellis Island at least none that fit the age, tried to locate the school at St Leonards Sussex but does not seem to exist today, I would think it was a very small establishment taking boarders rather than day boys. I looked up the headmaster in later years he was still running a small school but in a different county so I doubt there are any records to be found for school years. Do you have any docs at all????? and have you located his wife in 1911???

Morning Lily :)
It certainly looks like S.America in the 1891 census.
I looked in All Resources with no luck.
Interesting find in 1901 Ambrose Emerson house surgeon Stanley Hosp Kirkdale single his birthplace Montevideo United States whereas it clearly says S. America on the census.
A rellie perhaps??

Hiya Lily
I'll look in fmp for sailings for Geo Wm also 1880 US census for his father Wm.

T.S
Later: zero in US, not one had a father Wm.
Too iffy in sailings, birth year unknown etc etc.
DRATS..........

Looks like we will have to wait for Andy as he did say he knew about Geo Wm after his marriage.
If the death Glossy found is correct, he died in W Dby Union Infirmary.

Evening everyone,
First just wanted to say " thankyou" ever so much for all the information that you have given. I knew that if I posted on the bootle forum I would get help. Its so much appreciated.
Yes glossy that is GWE's death & burial. He had been the dentist and they had given him too much gas, and on the way home had fallen into the leeds/liverpool canal, caught pnemonia and died. He had 4 children to Margaret: George- 1904, William-1905 ( my grandad) and twins Hazel & Ralph -1909. Margaret was married again soon after GWE passed away to a Thomas Rainford, then he died and she married a Mr Mooney.
Before GWE got married he lived at 34 Duncan street, and it says from the marriage cert that he was a mariner. The only other info that I know about him is that his father was called William and he was a mariner too. I have been searching for him for nearly 20 years on & off and I never get any further. I found some info a while ago about a Ralph Emerson arriving in Liverpool just after GWE died and I have been wondering whether they could be connected. I tried searching for him again, but no trace. I got in touch with some relatives in the USA recently and they told me that GWE was a musican on the liners ??? cannot find anything out about that either.
I so grateful for any more help and if anyone needs any more info, just let me know. and by the way my name is Andrea, but I like Andy. Thank you again.

Hi Andy
A tragic death for George Wm.
I saw marriage in 1911 (sep q) for a Margaret Emerson to Thos H Rainford. It didn't have an asterisk for a previous name, neither does it for Margaret Rainford to John B Mooney 1921 Litherland St Philip.
Perhaps they named twin Ralph after the famous Ralph Waldo Emerson??
The only Ralph I can find arrived in Scotland 1907 from Canada, he's a journalist.
T.S

No luck incoming passengers for Geo or father Wm.

Hi
They did name Ralph after the famous poet: Ralph Waldo Emerson, as there has been talk in the family for a while that we were related to him, but as I cannot find anything out about GWE i cannot be sure.
They were married at Liverpol reg office on 27th January 1903, and there 2 witnesses are : Ellen A Burns ( not too sure as the writing is very hard to read) and I think the other is a Edna gideon?
My grt grandmother was living in Rose Vale, Seaforth and her father Patrick Joseph mcnaulty was still alive. GWE was living at 34 Duncan street and his father : William was listed as deceased and he was a mariner.
I have all marriage certs for my grt gran and any other certs like births etc.
Thank you for any help that you may offer, its most apprecated.

Hi folks
The only Margaret McNaulty I can find aged 20 in 1901 was working as a servant in Seaforth 21 Alder St.
I combed the census looking for the address from marr cert with no luck.
I'm pleased to say in modern maps, in the same block from Alder St, is Hawarden Grove..
Not much help but makes me happy to find old street names :D

Hi Tina,
Patricks occupation is listed as "joiner". I was told that they came over from Ireland, but I cannot find anything more about Margaret or her father. I dont know her mother's name or whether she has any siblings. I went to the history fair at St georges hall last year, and no one could help me. Its just so very faustrating at times, as Ive done my Nans side and my Dads and they were relatively easy. The only other thing that bothers me is that on my Nan & Grandad's wedding cert ( William was GWE second son) is that my grandad has put his father's name as Gerald Josef Emerson ?? But as far as I know his name was George William Emerson. Let me know if you need any more info. Thank you Tina and everyone else who has helped, its most appreciated.

Hi Andy :D
Gerald Josef Emerson is a new name in the mix.
Is there any way you could post a copy of the marriage cert?
Just wondering if the witnesses could help?
Patrick, I did a search for joiner/carpenters in 1881 (you can put occupations in) with no luck sorry.
In the birth index there are two Margaret's who could be her.
Both after 1881 census was taken.
1891 still looking....
