Went to visit our youngest daughter yesterday and this beautiful bird landed in her apple tree.It is a male Western Tanager quite common in pine/cedar forests and her house is in the middle of that kind of forest.

Matt - That is indeed a beautiful bird - the nearest to one like that in Virginia
that I have seen is our Gold Finches!!

Hi Patricia we are waiting for the American Gold Finches to arrive here on Vancouver Island. They usually show up in early June then go up into the mountains for thistle down seeds then come back to us for around 2 weeks for the niger seed feeders that many people put out for them.We also get the Lesser Gold Finches.Looks the same except the yellow is not as brilliant.
As I have remarked before we are very lucky to live less than 100 metres from one of the largest bird/wildlife sanctuaries on Vancouver Island but the only drawback is the bl***y woodpeckers our oak trees :) :) Very noisy for such small bird and every couple of years the municipality has to bring in the trappers to take out about 5 beavers and maybe a couple of dozen musk rats from the creek very close to our house. Some beavers dammed it a couple of years ago and it had to be blasted apart.
Did Colin get the job?

Shelagh - Vegan or not that looks absolutely delicious!!! I certainly
would give it a try!! :D

Matt - I hadn't seen Gold Finches for a few years until I started hanging
out the Finch Sock with Nyjer Seed, (whatever that is) and they suddenly
reappeared, now they are here every day. The first time I saw one many
years ago I thought someone's canary had gotten out of it's cage. :D
The other lovely bird is the "Blue Bird!" and I have only ever seen them
in Williamsburg, which is about 30 mins away.

Eastern Blue Bird

Oh, nearly forgot, yes, he did get the job and has to go next week to Baltimore for two days of training.
Will let you know how he gets on.

Thanks for the update on Colin.Good luck to the young man.
So that's how you spell Nyger!!Had a good look about it on Mr Google.Basically the same as thistle seeds but they used to come from Ethiopia and Nigeria and that is why you attract them Patricia because that is so close to their natural preferred food.Keep feeding them they are so beautiful.Like you, Sheila thought that some ones canary had escaped the first time she saw one.At the moment I am going through lots of sugar as all the hummingbird eggs hatched and we have about 15 of the little flying jewels feeding at the 2 large and 4 small nectar feeders in the front and back garden and now the Rufous hummers have arrived so it is open warfare between the very territorial Annas and the very laid back Rufous hummingbirds

Canterbury!

Spent a lovely afternoon having High Tea at the Cavalier Hotel
with members of the Brit Club. Also received complimentary glass
of Champagne. They even went so far as to roll out the Red Carpet for us...NOT!!! :D

I think they are the flats at the East end of the Bay , towards Birchington/ Margate. Patricia.
Reculver is West of Minnis so that must be a sunrise shot.
I have no claim to it, it was BBC South East “pic of the day “. Very beautiful, I agree.
Regards
