I have only in recent times realised just how hard it was. Little things like no jam and no real bananas for six years. Oranges were only available on the black market. But we were all in it together and nobody ever complained. I don't think benefits were thought of. When the lads went away their stuff was stored in the ever popular pawn shop but always available if they returned. .

Loved visiting there in the 70s Joe. Always remember the smell of the fish on sale. Loads of small retailers making a living.
