Hillsborough cover-up compensation for 601 victims as South Yorkshire Police agrees damages

The Hillsborough Disaster on April 15, 1989, claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans

South Yorkshire Police has agreed to pay damages to hundreds of people after a cover-up following the tragic Hillsborough disaster.

A settlement has been agreed following a civil claim for misfeasance in a public office on behalf of 601 claimants.

South Yorkshire and West Midlands forces agreed it with the settlement coming despite nobody ever being convicted over the cover-up which saw 96 Liverpool fans die at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final at Sheffield Wednesday's ground

New inquests, which concluded in 2016, found that the 96 men, women and children who died were unlawfully killed and fans played no part in the causes of the disaster.

The claim was started in 2015 and agreed in April earlier this year.

However, news of it could not be reported until the end of a trial which saw South Yorkshire Police chief superintendent Donald Denton, 83, retired detective chief inspector Alan Foster, 74, and Peter Metcalf, 71, who acted as solicitor for the force, face charges of amending police officers’ statements to minimise blame on the force and perverting the course of justice.

Last week, the charges the trio faced were dropped with a judge ruling there was no case to answer.

A spokesman for Saunders Law, the lead solicitors for the group litigation, said: “Through this civil claim for misfeasance in a public office, 601 victims sought justice and accountability for the deliberate, orchestrated and thoroughly dishonest police cover-up that supressed the truth about the responsibility of the police and blamed the football supporters for the horrific events that unfolded at the Hillsborough Stadium on April 15 1989.”

The disaster at Sheffield Wednesday’s stadium was investigated by West Midlands Police.

Lawyers said the cover-up had caused additional psychiatric injury to the survivors of the disaster and the families of those who died.

The spokesman added: “The settlement of these claims marks the end of an unparalleled and extraordinary fight for justice by the victims and their families.”

Saunders Law said there had been “an almost complete failure of the justice system to deliver justice” and called on the Government to implement a Hillsborough Law, which would include a duty of candour for public officials.

The spokesman said: “We trust that this settlement will put an end to any fresh attempts to rewrite the record and wrongly claim that there was no cover-up.

“In so commenting, we contrast the dignity of the bereaved families and the supporters with the conduct of those who still seek to peddle the discredited lies of the past.”

The law firm said the police forces will pay damages to compensate each claimant for injuries they suffered and provide access to a treatment fund for further psychiatric treatment or counselling.

In cases where claimants have died, the compensation will be paid to their estate.

I'm amazed how any judge say there was no case to answer when even the police have admitted liability.

I can remember the 100th derby match. Emlyn Hughes was on the cover of Goal magazine for that week.

It was on Tuesday October 8 1968 at Anfield. Ended 1-1. Bally 65 minutes, Tommy Smith 75 minutes.

The Echo souvenir cover is blow.

Bit of an eye-opener.

LFC interested in buying Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid, though it's said he'd need to accept a drop in salary.

Just checked. Atletico's top 10 salaries for 2021. Oblak is the goalkeeper.

LFC's highest paid player is Salah on £200,000 per week.

Luis Suárez £281,000
Koke (Jorge Resurreción) £280,00
Jan Oblak £271,000
Saúl (Saúl Ñíguez) £207,000
Vitolo (Víctor Machín) £189,000
João Félix £165,000
Mario Hermoso £151,000
Yannick Carrasco £151,000
Geoffrey Kondogbia £114,000
Thomas Lemar £114,000

Footballers wages are disgusting and need to be capped hence my views on Saka missing the penalty, if he gets paid extortionate wages the he should be able to take a penalty age doesn't come into it.

Thought this would partially show the difficulty both Liverpool and Everton have in attracting, and retaining, top class talent.

Can't vouch for the accuracy, but from the bits available, don't think it's too wide of the mark.

Liverpool would, reputedly, have to have offered Gini Wijnaldum approx. £310,000 (before tax) a week to match his 3-year deal at PSG.

That would be around the offer Richarlison ought to be expecting from Real Madrid.

Never been in the position of deciding whether to work for £100k a week or £300k a week. Tough choice. :) :)

Wonder if he's in the market for a second-hand "Once A Blue Always A Blue" t-shirt. :?:

I posted this over two years ago when Villa were in the Championship. Probably could have got him for less than half of fee that City have just paid.

“‘I'd take a chance on Jack Grealish from A. Villa. He's got excellent vision and ball control, and works from box to box for 90 mins. He is not afraid to tackle unlike a couple I could name in Liverpool's team. He also scores goals and sees a good pass when needed. I know he has had a few problems off the field in the past, but I think he would be well worth a punt.”
