Bootle site back online

Postby Mack » Tue Jan 09, 2018 2:40 pm

Hi gang,

You may have spotted the site has been down for a while. This was due to installing an SSL ( it's the green padlock that displays in the address bar in your web browser).

With the recent donations I've paid for this with your help.

If you know anyone having problems accessing the site let them know to refresh the page or clear their browser cache as the DNS (domain name server) has changed and thay may still be seeing an older version.

Hope you are all ok, and apologies for any inconvenience.

Cheers,

Mack

No worries Joe,

There is still an issue I'm hoping that will be sorted soon, it's related to our .com domain which is currently experiencing issues and unreachable (not displaying) since the switch. the .co.uk seems to be fine. I've let our hosting company know and hopefully it will be fixed asap.

Cheers,

Mack

Hi folks,

Quick update... our .co.uk is working fine at the moment. If you know anyone using our .com please let them know it's an issue still being looked into and to use our .co.uk instead. It's a security certificate related issue related to the .com domain name not being issued.

There appears to be some confusion between myself and our web host and unfortunately the main guy there who I usually deal with is away on holiday so tech support have emailed him on the issue.

It's not a mega issue, I'm just concerned people using Google to search for our site using the search term 'Bootle History' will see the .com address showing first which currently has the issue.

Underneath in search in Google shows the .co.uk address which is working fine.

I may end up removing the .com domain name and just stick with the .co.uk one, I'm not sure right now.

Stay tuned... I'll let you know when I have more info,

Cheers everyone,

Mack

Hi everyone,

At this time I'm still in the process of getting our http://www.bootlehistory.com domain name secured so bear with me on that one. I think it should be resolved soon.

Currently still waiting for our web host provider to implement the SSL on it.

Remember to let your friends and family know http://www.bootlehistory.co.uk is working so use this as the default bookmark for the website. It will always be the one that works.

I didn't realize it would be such a chore setting things up. Should have stayed in a cave with 2 tin cans and a very long piece of string to get everyone wired up.

Part of the confusion as previously mentioned is that the guy I deal with is on holiday and his tech support team are relaying my messages to him by email which must be annoying for him as he on his hols taking a break.

...

VERY IMPORTANT INFO IF YOU ARE STILL USING INTERNET EXPLORER

One thing I've noticed if you are still using Internet Explorer as opposed to Microsoft's latest Edge browser with SSL enabled to visit our Bootle forum that is that there is an annoying message that pops up in a yellow box bottom of the web browser displaying the following message...

Only secure content is displayed - What's the risk - with a box saying 'Show all content'.

Image

The fix for this old browser issue is as follows...

Turn off "only secure content is displayed"

To do this click on the cog icon top right of Internet Explorer

Then click on Internet options...

A pop up box will appear on screen.

Click on the tab 'Security'

Custom level>>>Scroll down to: Display mixed content>>>Enable>>>OK

Restart IE.

The yellow pop up box should now stop appearing bottom of each page when visiting a different page.

It's annoying I know to have to do this if you are still using IE but it's a old web browser that has not been updated for ages however many people still use it using Windows 7. This fix should work though if you are still using it.

Hope this helps if anyone is having issues with Internet Explorer.

Cheers,

Mack

I've added a video link which displays how to do this...

HOORAY!!! Soz about all the new changes Matt and excellent news to see you got it working with Internet Explorer using windows 7.

It should actually always be seamless when upgrading and evolving however the pesky web developers are changing things all the time and IE is ancient now.

Great to see the fix sorted it for you.

On that bombshell... LOL noooo... Anyways more technical news (putting me big space goggles on now). I've now fixed our .com domain name for the site but it was tricky.

I ended up with the help of tech support who host our website re-direct http://www.bootlehistory.com to https://www.bootlehistory.co.uk

It may not work though unless you clear your web browsers cache and are still seeing an older version of the site.

Bill Fawcett contacted me about this a few days ago and he got it working. This was before the re-direct was added but it's still related to the web browsers cache and it works differently depending on which web browser you are using.

There is another way too called Flush DNS if you are using a web browser and the cache fix does not resolve the issue...
https://www.wikihow.com/Flush-DNS

Google search will not display our site correctly in search correctly at this time because of these changes so this fixes things to get to our website.

As soon as the web bots pick up the changes everything will be back to normal which could take a few weeks.

OK I'm off out now disco dancing wearing my finest Safari suit :D
