Dan, do children still die in the canal? Any idea how many last year? How can you keep children away from the canal. I think education of parents and children would be better. So sad.

Haven't heard of any drownings for years.
Very rare to see unaccompanied young children now.
We were semi-feral growing up. Lived in Netherton, but could be found anywhere between Aintree, Litherland and Hall Road beach, on foot of course.
The cut was for fishing. Sticklebacks, perch and roach using bamboo canes for rods.

Hi Babs,

I am too young to remember your Brother, I'm sorry. I was born in 1965. But my parents lived on Garden Lane and will certainly have known him and possibly your family. They always warned me about mucking around on the canal, telling me that they knew people who had drowned there. This is almost certainly a reference to your Brother.

The children drowned in the canal in Bootle from 1951 to 1959.
