WOW! How this "Bootle schools" thread has digressed. In an attempt to get it back to "bootle schools", I will say that Sister Bernadine, at St. James, was an absolute sadistic and heartless B___ch! (Are we allowed to say bitch?). Having said that, I fully expect by tomorrow this thread will have further digressed to the point where it is discussing porn movies where the star is a dominatrix dressed as a nun. (I know you've seen that one). And before anyone asks, yes ... she was the head-mistress!

No offense intended, just a little payback at her expense.

Hi Pammy, I am sure you will remember him. He lived on the Captains Lane estate. He was a tall man (well he looked it to me when I was a child). He was a friend of my Dad. He went on to St George of England. He used to organise the school dances there when I was in St Monicas. That would be well after you emigrated.

I remember Eddie Murray the PE teacher at Roberts then transferring to St Georges, he was not as gentle as he has been portrayed..He was very handy with his 'slipper' a gym shoe he used to frequently whack backsides laying you over his knee. Remember his 'inspections' systematically pulling the front of shorts open to allegedly see if you were wearing underpants! Then his excursions into the showers turning the water onto cold to get you all out then slapping backsides as you ran past him..

It was posted on the forum by "John 1878" in the link "Roberts Juniors 1949" It is a lovely clear photo.

Do you remember all the boys leaning on the wire fence watching us play "Netball" in our blouses and brown knickers  Can you imagine that happening to-day!!!

No, it's on the side of the building and kids are sitting crossed legs for a picture and you can see the engraved stone in background say INFANTS....I know that pic is out there someplace but thanks so much for responding to my query

I am a new member to this site. It was interesting to see the many posts on education in Bootle. I went to St. Joan of Arc's then St. James in the 50' and 60's. I too was bullied by Sisters Lucy and Bernadine. Those two knocked all the religion out of me I am now happy to say. But on the other hand, Miss Burns who was one of the greatest teachers ever, taught me to read and write. I then had a lovely teacher at St. James called Anne Martin, who gave me a love of history, that I have continued to study through out my life. Many thanks to them. As for the nuns, they are probably roasting in hell.

Lifes journey has taken me from Hemans Street, Anderson Avenue, London, South Africa, Germany and now Buckinghamshire.

Hi Maggie.f Where did you live in Anderson Ave, I lived there for years, and my parents lived there til they knocked them down. I also went to St Joans with Sister Lucy, who I thought was a sadist. Richie Christensen.

Hi Richie,

I remember you. I lived on the square my maiden name was Margaret Pruden, I have two brothers and a sister Maureen. I used to play with your sisters and was in the army with your cousin Sue Christensen, she was one of my best friends when we lived in Germany.

Hi Maggie I remember your family very well. I left the Ave in 1963 when I joined the army. Ican't place Sue, unless she is my uncle Bennie's daughter. Where were you stationed in Germany.
Best wishes Rtchie.

Hi Richie,

I was stationed in Rheindahlen with the WRAC, did two postings there. Sue was from a family of all girls I think. She said her dad was your dads brother. They lived off Stanley Road, can't remember the street, having left Bootle in 1972 I find it difficult to remember the street names.

Hey Maggie my dads brother lived in Hertford Rd just a few doors down from my dads mother. I was stationed in Wuppertal and Dortmund, until1967, then I was posted to Sharjah in the persian gulf then back to the U.K. til I left in 1972. Richie.

My question is did the strict schooling do us any harm ?.
I was once hit on the back of my legs with a ruler and it hurt like mad,i think the teachers name was miss Hampson Linacre lane school, it was for talking in line i made sure i didn't let her catch me again but i never stopped talking.

Danny
Bring back the cane and let us get more respect in our society.
If you got caned did it do you any harm as i got caned nearly every week and it made me a better person not like the kids of today who bully the teachers and older people and be honest with yourself if you got caned you deserved it and if your dad found out you got a good hiding off him as well

I agree with you Henry if i got in trouble in school i got in trouble at home .
and to answer Danny's question my grandchildren were brought up to have respect and if they behaved like some of the children of today i would want them to be disciplined.
I feel sorry for a lot of children as they dont have good role models at home so they have it hard,i am just glad my grandchildren are grown now with children of there own i dont envy them as it must be hard these days to teach children right from wrong when there are so many outside influences.

As an ex teacher I would hate to see the return of the cane. To me it is just a bit barbaric. There are other ways of disciplining children.I taught in a secondary school with some challenging students. The discipline was not very good when I first started but then we got a head whose first rule was she never wanted to hear a raised voice from a member of staff- always treat a child as you would want to be treated yourself- hard sometime when they were kicking off but they learnt that that was not the way to go. We went from a failing school to an outstanding one- same children just a different philosophy.

hitting children just makes them want to hit back. The violent ones probably come from violent homes-thay need showing that there is a different way.

Joyce, I stand up and applaud you....I totally agree....I was scared and hated school because of what I saw but it was those teachers who had a wise and peaceful approach that got me through...Miss Woods of Science was termed WACKY IN THE HEAD but she let us express and have an opinion in her class...she was so open to it all...I loved her for that and through out the years never forgot her and realized looking back she was just an eccentric lady.....she taught at Roberts school in Bootle....

Thank you Pamsy for your comments.

It really upsets me when people go on about bringing back the cane etc or throw them out of school. What good does it do? If you expel a pupil they then become someone elses problem. Provision must be made of course so that they dont affect other pupils but you need to show them that their behaviour is unexceptable and that they will feel so much better about things if they do change. It is all to do with convincing them that they can succeed and giving them some self esteem.

In 95% of cases this will work, sadly in a few it doesnt and then they may have to be permanently excluded and hopefully found something that will work for them.

sorry henry and betty i can't agree with you , what about the saddistic nuns and teachers who caned kids for nothing , i said before violence breeds violence , theres no justifacation for mature adult beating kids , remember the kids will get older and be adults themselves , should they beat there kids , i never hit my 2 sons , i think they grew up ok ,

My dad went to a Catholic school, the brothers were so strict and the punishment so hard. Needless to say neither my brother or myself was sent to a Catholic school. Maybe things have changed in the year 2010. I know that it is wrong to hit or verbally abuse children or adults.

I went to B.G.S.The best teacher was Miss Smalley who never raised her voice she had a demeanour which demanded respect, I do think as other writers have said the difficult pupils are not taught discipline or respect at home if my boys were disciplined in school they knew to expect similar at home not their father going up to sort the teacher out.I agree some punishments especially at the boys school were over the top, at bedford road we were wrapped over the knuckles by Miss Fleetwood which was very painful but as bad as I can remember.I only realised recently how poor B.G.S.was with very low academic attainment we couldn't have all been thick could we?
