Hi Dan...….Thanks for yet another stunning input to the site.

That newspaper clip of "1080 & all that" should be up on the wall of every Bootle school.

Some fascinating details there...….& the 1880's was a real 'Boom' time for Bootle...….worth a lot more than the "5 Bob & 4d" it was valued at in 1080...!!

My attention was drawn (amongst many others) to the entry for 1881; 'The Old Toll Bar' on STANLEY Rd charging 6d & 3d …!!...now where exactly would that be, I recall the pub 'The Old Toll Bar' but that was situated on the corner of Millers Bridge & Derby Rd ?

I also got engrossed in the adjacent story about 'The Trollopes of Belgium' but unfortunately it's unfinished ……..any chance you could add the rest of it please. No stress.

Cheers

Did exactly the same thing as you Paul.

Only noticed the Trollope article when I was posting. At the library, I tend to focus on the article that catches my eye and edit the clip accordingly.

When I was at college at Aberystwyth, one of the lads, Mike Keaton from Aintree, was a bit of a Trollope jihadist.

I've tried my best over the last 40 years to read Trollope, The Warden is supposed to be a good intro, but I've always given up before Chapter 1 ends.

Anyway, Crosby Library has now re-opened and all the clips are indexed, so I'll find the rest of the article and post it soon.

I've also got some of the front pages of the Bootle Times from the 1880's onward. I'll post them as well on this thread. They're fascinating.

Below is an excerpt from the December 22 1888 front page.

The Stanley Hall venue mentioned in the St Alexander's announcement was to become St Joseph's School in the 1930's.

After WWII, the building was home to St Winefride's Girls' School until June 1964.

From September 1964 to December 1966 the building was occupied by the Salesian College.

St Martin's House on Stanley Road was built on the site of Stanley Hall and its grounds.

Mosaic that was on the wall above the altar in the original Holy Ghost Church, Poulsom Drive.

It was the work of George Mayer Martin, a WWII Hungarian emigré, who was a Senior Lecturer at Liverpool College of Art.

He died in1961.

The Down Your Street page on Hemen St.. I think that's Danny Lewis' wife and son "Mrs M Lewis". Maybe Danny will come on and confirm it??

Henry talking about the loss of Strand Road and the US state streets on the Litherland Town Hall thread
set me thinking about a few of the streets that have been spared the bulldozer.

Top to bottom I make it; Olivia, Benedict, Beatrice, Bedford terraces, with St Richard's on Miranda Road top left.

1907 Liverpool North End Silver Prize Band.

Image

The location is a garden on Hawthorne Road, with the spire of Christ Church, on Breeze Hill, in the background.

In this era there was several brass bands playing in the Bootle area.

Alexandra Dock Brass Band, Bootle Borough Brass Band, Bootle Excelsior Brass Band, Bootle Mission Band, Bootle Police Brass Band.

I don't know the provenance of the North End band, but below is a cutting from the Liverpool Echo, March 14 1914.

The dinner was held at the Junior Reform Club, which was on Stanley Street in Liverpool.

Jack Brimage lived next door to us with his wife. We lived in at 39 Croxteth road in the 70's.

I nearly set his house on fire by accident by launching a firework in our backyard and it landed on their bed in their house next door by going through their back bedroom window. I was about 6 years old at the time, and we were firing them off to celebrate Bommy Night.

They were not too pleased to say the least. I was however only 6 years old at the time and always getting up to mischief, exploring and stuff.

I was on the 52 coming from town last Thursday. As the bus was coming to the Masonic Hall on Sefton Lane, a fella gets up

and says to the driver, "I'm looking for St Phillip's Church. It's just by the Lift Bridge."

Thought it might have been the new Doctor Who.

How good was it, sitting on top of the fountain.

Thanks for posting Christ Church. I was baptized and married at this lovely church. Looking at it now it looks the same as it did in 1973 !!
