Hi there!

My grandad and his family used to live at 72 Elizabeth Road from the 1950s - 2000s. Their surnames are Walton. Jean Walton. Ada Edwards. John Walton. Geoff Walton. Terry Walton. Linda Walton and Carol Walton. He is just reminiscing about the good old days! Hope we can find somebody who remembers them! Also their nan Jessie Hughes lived with them too! He remembers Gordon the plasterer and even worked with him! He has fond memories of this street and the chippy on the corner! If anyone knows those last names please reply I would love to hear your stories!! Thank you!

Goal Defence in the centre of second row from the back is Paula Phythian who was at St Cath's 1970 to 1975.
I'd guess this is about 1972/3. Sorry don't recall the names of any of her teammates.

It's only been gone 8 years but it was infinitely more informative than the 24 hour Sky/BBC dross channels.

Les, yes they were prefabs, that would have been Ivanhoe Street, off Bank Road and at the rear of Browne Street and Kenilworth Street. JJC.

Cheers Bob.

Just noticed Hugh Baird in one of the photos. Started out in the New Zealand Shipping Co. engine rooms.

The Merchant Navy was a way out for a lot of lads.

Also the Holy Ghost Scout troop. They would sit in the first two rows, on the left of the aisle, at Holy Ghost, for 11o'clock mass.

Big decision of a Sunday was get up early and go to the 9.30 mass( over by 10), or have a lie-in and go to the 11 mass (an hour long!!!).

Usually preferred the lie-in and took the consequences.

I work now as a freelance writer and have recently brought out a book about my family and the social history of these streets. I have agreed with the publisher to distribute a number of copies free to those who visit this Forum. if anyone would like a copy, please email your address to ,
anthonypwailey@gmail.com and I will post one to you. The book, Diary of the Smyth Wailey's, is also available on Amazon Kindle if you wish to have a preview.

best regards

Thanks Bob, I'm sure many members of this forum would find it interesting. As this forum demonstrates, it is not so much about individual lives in Bootle
but of the surrounding community all along the river. I hope you enjoy it. As I mentioned before, just email me at anthonypwailey@gmail.com and I will send a copy out.

regards,

tony

Tony, I think it would be brilliant if you could get your book into at least one of our local libraries.

It sounds daft, but Crosby Library is the go-to for Bootle history.

I think I've got the right Tony Wailey.

Image

Any chance of you scanning in the pamphlet you published on the Liverpool seamans' union?

When the shops open up, I'll go to Bold Street and see what's on sale.

Looking forward to reading your biography of George Garrett - a Scouser and a Wobbly to boot, a fairly unique combination.

Thanks Dan, yes you have my number :D I fully intend to get copies into the libraries but have been held up by you know what; News from Nowhere and Pritchards in Crosby Village both have copies of the book. The Seaman's Union stuff (1966 strike) was published years ago but I think I can get a link and will post up later on the forum. Glad you're enjoying the Garrett stuff - although he was a south ender (Park Lane) he always used to sail out of Bootle and speaks very warmly of it and, 'the Marsh Lane Stokers, the hardest men on the Western Ocean'

Hi everyone, not sure where to post this but wondered if you could help. Ive moved to a job in Bootle and thought i would do a quiz on Bootle trivia to get people more interested in the area. Do you have any interesting trivia i can create questions out of?

Thanks Dan, here is the link to the Seaman's article. Let me know if it is the right one. All the best
