Liverpool lad, my best friend, Thelma Johnston and her sister Dolly lived in Elizabeth Rd, until the mid sixties. They were orphaned when Thelma was only six years old, and Dolly sixteen. Their landlord allowed Dolly to keep their home, with their grandma as guarantor. After Dolly married, Thelma went to work in America, where she still lives today with her husband Bob. She has visited me every year since I traced her with the help of the Bootle forum. If you let me know your name, I'll ask if she remembers you.

Many thanks Liverpool Lad for posting that link.
Miv - what a coincidence, one of my good friends Isabel Jones also lived in Elizabeth Road
and I used to call on her on the way to school and we would usually walk together. I also went on my
first holiday(without parents) with her to the Isle of Man when I was seventeen.

It's a small world Patricia. Our paths probably crossed without us knowing it. Dolly was a great cinema goer, and was always happy to let me tag along with her and Thelma. They had a really hard life, resulting in Thelma never having children of her own for fear of history repeating itself. To keep you up to date, "Steve" is doing well, a bit underweight so being fattened up on peanuts.

My mum, Elsie Smith, (61 Elizabeth Rd) was a good friend of Thelma. I made contact with Thelma some years ago. How is she? Mum and her her sisters Bella and Madge lived in Elizabeth Rd from about 1942 to 1958.miv donelan wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 8:10 pm Liverpool lad, my best friend, Thelma Johnston and her sister Dolly lived in Elizabeth Rd, until the mid sixties. Hello Patricia
Re your photo taken in I O M
Are you and your friend in Port Erin and is that Bradda Head in the background?
It looks just like a photo (I am remembering) that I had taken with a friend I went to the I O M with way back in the 50’s.

Doreen - I remember we had gone out for the day it was so long ago in the Fifties too, I have a few photos from that holiday one on the tram on the Promenade and another in some lovely Park. We also went to a big dance hall one evening. All in All, a lovely holiday for my first without parents!!!!

Patricia these maps are before your house was built
the bootle boundary just detours around Melville road built 1935
named on behalf of the builders Willowbrook Estates
on this map Harris drive 1923 was not built
the boundary goes over pennington bridge
inbetween Kirk road and St Andrews road
through the middle of the Pacific pub

Bob: Thank you so much for posting the map and description I note it states
25 Melville Road which is where my parents lived before the bombing of the house and
eventual move across the street to 22 Melville Road.
What I don't understand is the following:
"the bootle boundary just detours around Melville road built 1935
named on behalf of the builders Willowbrook Estates
on this map Harris drive 1923 was not built
the boundary goes over pennington bridge
inbetween Kirk road and St Andrews road

If it "Detours around" does that mean it doesn't include? and yet I note the
address is "Bootle?" so confusing!

Patricia and Bob, if it's any help... way back in 1973/4 when I was house hunting we looked at a house on Rose Avenue (which I'm sure you know is next to Melville). The seller told us that because the boundary ran through the house the rates were apportioned. They got 2 bills, one each from Bootle and Litherland councils and their bin was emptied twice a week. We eventually bought a house that was wholly in Litherland. Only one bin emptying per week but less complicated if we'd ever need planning permission.

That is so sweet of you Elaine!!!
Thanks for the research Bee, it explains a lot of what my parents always stated. Then today, this photo appeared in one of the various Posts (Someone up above is obviously listening) and it also states pretty much the same thing. Wonder if the situation is still the same today?
Both my parents are on this photo plus a lot of the neighbours which brought back a lot of lovely memories.

My great grandad James Peterson is on the 1949 register, 54 Elizabeth Road. My great great uncle Henry Greggans is on the 1938 one 61 Melville Road. I love seeing all this info, this is the first time I’ve posted something, I’m not the best with technology, hopefully I’ve done it right

Love that this has been "Bumped" up again, I had forgotten all about same.
Elaine A little late, but thank you so much for your comment. I seem to receive a lot of the same from others,
so it must be true - but I myself, have difficulty seeing it - they are so much better looking than me - Thank Goodness!!!
