Margaret posted this article on Facebook - I'm just copying and pasting - very interesting.

The first Australian cricket team to tour Britain was comprised of the original inhabitants of that continent.
The team arrived in Britain in May 1868 and they attracted a great deal of public attention. The team would play 47 matches over the next six months - winning 14 matches, losing 14 matches and drawing another 19 matches - not a bad record.
One of the Australian teams star players was Unaarrimin or 'Johnny Mullagh.' George Tarrant, the English star bowler said of him 'I have never bowled to a better batsman.'
On their tour, the Australian cricket team played Bootle Cricket Club twice at their Wadham Road ground. They beat Bootle Cricket Club on both occasions - both matches being played over three days. The local press had this to say about the games -

'All the Bootle men are good cricketers and many of them old stagers in the game but they were fairly over-matched by the Antipodeans.'

The Australians played their first match in Bootle on the 31st July 1868 and their second on the 10th September 1868.
The Australians had conducted themselves impeccably throughout and had won many new friends in the area.
A slight mishap following their second match didn't change that.
At the end of each match, the Australians impressed the crowds with boomerang throwing and feats of physical strength. At Bootle, a gust of wind caught a boomerang and it flew into the crowd, striking a man on the head, cutting through his hat and severely wounding him - after prompt medical treatment he made a full recovery!

The Australian cricket team that toured Britain in 1868
Lived Linacre Lane, Trinity Road & Knowsley Road.

I enjoyed the 'Battle of the Atlantic 80th Anniversary display this weekend, as did thousands of others.

Nice to see the new HMS Defender in Liverpool.

Enclose the scorecard from when the crew of the previous HMS Defender played cricket at Bootle Cricket Club on 25th June 1944 (!!).

That HMS Defender was scuttled the following month in the Med after a German attack on July 11th 1944.

Cheers

FYI........Bootle Cricket Club are now 'Live streaming' all their matches at home on 'You Tube'.........& it's FREE.......No subscription charges.....see link below.

So this Saturday August 26th you could watch, from the comfort of your own armchair, what is probably the oldest 'Derby' match in Liverpool as Bootle host SEFTON Cricket Club

Both teams are mid table & it will, as always, be hotly contested.

Bootle were founded in 1833 & Sefton in 1860 (!)......pretty much a whole generation before ya Evertons (1878) & Liverpools (1892) of this world.

The match will commence at Noon prompt, so cut the crusts off your cucumber sandwiches & slice up your bunloaf early in readiness & don't forget to pop the bottle of Chablis into the fridge nice & early. (2nd team matches commence at 12.45pm).

Or better still.......Pop down there & see for yourself.....it's all FREE & there's a bar too, plus light snacks are usually available.

It's always appreciated when a programme is purchased, it costs a miserly £1 & is packed with information & fixtures.

There's a thriving Junior section & a Ladies team too (The Bootle Belles) .....see web pages for more info.

Enjoy.

Cheers

Bootle Times March 19 1935

An extract of an article published in the Bootle Times of 1883.

It outlines the loss of the Irlam Road ground, gifted to the club by the Earl of Derby, and the purchase of a plot of land on Hawthorne Road.

The land was bought on a 14 year lease.
