The name "Roberts" seems to ring a bell - does anybody know if they also serviced the Harris Drive, Melville, Norman & Springwell Road Area? It was my brothers' task to shovel it all neatly into the Coal Shed!

Done a spell on the coal , pre packed to all the little shops around Merseyside and Wirral and probably a bit of wales , from C&M FUEL in Park st , me ,wage and clunk on the hoppers filling the bags with coal and our lungs with the dust , turn to piece going out on the wagons that for the most part were driven by a selection of off duty firemen from Bootle.
Here for entertainment

Joe, there was a Bert Horton on Marsh Lane but he was more ragman than coalman, his shop was full of items from the two wars, pith helmets, bayonets, swords etc, (today his wares would be classed as antiques and collectables), T Houghton is Tom Houghton, I do a bit of work for him and he lives in Formby, he tells me he used to have a coalyard in Selwyn St at the bottom end, (Westminster Rd). John, I’ll put it down to a senior moment then, I do remember Bert Horton’s I thought he had a shop but can’t remember where it was on Marsh lane though. The yard that I mentioned was opposite the old baths and St Jimmy’s senior school for girls’ and the Holy Shop and Quinn’s was next to it, I hope I’m not hallucinating.
Cheers Joe.

Joe (Fatboyjoe90) your memory is fine, it was only the spelling (as you pointed out) of the name that you were not sure about, your knowledge of the lane at that time will be far superior to mine, we only moved to the Marsh Lane area after all of the Welsh streets had been demolished, from the way you describe it (being opposite the school) I imagine it would have been located where Carlton Walk was built.
