White Star Wanderers FC was of interest because they were, financially, at least the biggest club in the pre-JOC history of Bootle football.

While Bootle FC were playing at Hawthorne Road, which we would now call Wadham Road, White Star Wanderers played at Sandfield.

Because of it's financial backing, I thought White Star might play in the grounds of Sandfield House.

Then in the 1891 map, I came across a "football ground" which had an entrance via Sandfield Place, off Marsh Lane.

Sandfield Place is still there, as a cul-de-sac off Marsh Lane.

All Saints Primary School stands on the major part of the former White Star's home ground.

Linacre Gasworks was only yesterday, Bob. :)

I posted the earliest photo, I've got, of a local football side, Bootle AFC 1882/83, on the Bootle FC history thread just the other day.

The earliest Linacre team I found is the 1897 Linacre Bible Class AFC side.

Bet you never played many Bible Class sides in the JOC, Bob. :D

Image

They usually put AFC because in those days FC would denote a rugby union side.

What we call football now, would be termed the association or association rules game.

This is the Linacre Bible Class side referred to in the caption above.

I edited some of these pictures because I had to lighten the photo so much, the print became illegible.

You'll notice the team had joined the Bootle League in the 1924/25 season, from the Bootle JOC.

The JOC, founded for the 1921/22 season, was strictly age controlled.

The Bootle League, founded for the 1907/08 season, was open-age.

The JOC added an open-age Premier division for the 1930/31 season.

The Bootle League folded before the start of the 1930/31season as only 7 teams had applied to join.

The first mention I've got pf Linacre Gasworks is in the first season of the Bootle League.

I'm missing the last two seasons of the Bootle and District League (1905/06 and 1906/07), but in the 1904/05 season

there is no mention of a Linacre Gasworks side.

Bob Johnstone from the Salesian (started in1966, I think), signing forms for the great man,

All-rounder; football, cricket, basketball and athletics.

Played in the reserves with Phil Thompson.

You'll see him, on this thread, in the St Mary's Old Boys' side.

Dan, met up with great players our kid from the JOC the other day Litherland Utd members.

Going to put up some great stuff from Seamus What a man say it again what a man he and Eddie.
Seamus has got me more interested in doing more research on the JOC.

Here's a couple of pics from BUCKLEY HILL ....taken 16/9/23......... (scene of thousands of JOC battles Royal).

I was delighted to see nearly every pitch in use .....all Junior games & all being played in good spirit with lots of players wearing BLACK boots too (!)

The building to the left (below) isn't a Nuclear Bunker but is the changing rooms, much different to how I recall.

Image

Thankfully there is a 'Scran Van' & a good old "Mr Whippy" van (see below)....not sure if it still plays "Greensleeves"..??

My Dad's seafarer mate (Frank Hands) ran a 'Scran Van' there back in the 70's.

Cheers

Does anybody have a legible photograph of the Crosby and District Football League honours board, which I believe resides at Bootle FC?

Thank you
