FRIENDS paid tribute today to one of Britain's oldest football players, who collapsed and died during a game of badminton.
Ron Downing, who died a day short of his 75th birthday, was believed to be in the middle of his third game of badminton when he collapsed last Thursday with a suspected heart attack.
He had played football in the Liverpool Old Boys' League against Old Holts just two Saturdays ago.
Mr Downing was chairman of Old Bootleians FC and two months ago he was presented with an FA award for 50 years' service to the game.
Wayne Clapham, secretary of Old Bootleians said: " Ronnie was the oldest player actively involved with the Football Association still playing.
"He was absolutely dedicated and fit as a fiddle. He holds the record for scoring the most goals in amateur football, more than 1,500 in his career.
"He also did a lot of charity work. He was a real gentleman."
The former governor of Bootle grammar school lived in Blundellsands with Joan, his wife of 50 years, and was Lord of the Manor of Lydiate, a title he bought.

An old school friend from WB called yesterday, Brian Porter, haven't spoken to Brian in nearly 60 years, we had a very nice catchup chat.
Brian was a very good footballer and still involved with REMYCA . He looks in on this thread and knows many of the players mentioned and enjoys the posts.
I believe he knows Bob and Albie.
Cheers/Ken

Hi Bob,
Hope you on the mend.
I remember Roy Vernon stumping out a fag on the wall at Goodison before he came on the pitch after half time.
Not unknown for us to have a couple of pints before we kicked off, never smoked though
