I know my grandfather was a brickie, but by 1926 he was a beerseller living at 29 Ivanhoe Street. Does any kind soul know if there was a pub at that address, and if so, what was it called >

Ivanhoe St was a small street that ran off Bank Rd, sorry but the only dwellings i can remember are the prefabs that must have been built when Ivanhoe St and one side of Browne St were destroyed in the blitz, the nearest pub would have been the Merton Arms situated on the corner of Irlam Rd and Ashcroft St, and in the other direction you had the Derby Arms at the corner of Strand Rd and Irlam Rd, i have never heard any mention of a pub on Ivanhoe St but i can assure you that if one did ever exist someone on this site will point you inthe right direction. Like me John you will only remember the prefabs, i am sure that your post with the name of the pub will be a great help to Pinchalynch, well in young man. just going off thread a bit i hope you don't mind Pinchalynch but it is in the same area and it is a little query that John (JJ) may be able to help me with, here we go John, can you think of any other street in Bootle where the houses like the ones in Browne St had light wells in the front of the house, giving light into the basement/cellar of the house, you had similar on Derby Rd just past Millers Bridge but they had steps leading down to the basement , the houses in Browne St didn't have any steps leading down. Hi Pinchalynch,
I had a look in 1938 Directory for Ivanhoe Street, there was no pub listed then.
What was your grandad's name?
It could well have been that he had a licence to sell beer from his home, like off licence, and maybe not a pub.
He would have needed a licence to sell beer, they had to apply to the magistrates court for the licence, there are records at Liverpool records office.

Thanks bernie, john, bobhamo, jan, johnjames.I think the likelihood is that yes, he could have been working at a pub but living in Ivanhoe street.
I have a great grandfather Peter Lynch who, in the 1871 census was also a beer seller living at 113 Derby Road, who had previously been a shipping clerk. He died in 1872.
Can I say that I am amazed at the responses from this really friendly site ?
Absolutely fantastic
Thanks again everyone

Don't know what year Bobhamo's map was printed, but have noticed that the Bootle Arms and the Elm House are not on it, also noticed that public houses where situated at the corner of Pleasant St/ Derby Rd also at the corner of Sandy Lane/ Derby Rd it also indicates one at the top of Canal St/Windsor place, i know of the one opposite the Georges on Marsh Lane but have not got a clue about the others, does any one have the names of any of the public houses. John I,m not sure what you mean by light well but our house on Peel Road had a small front garden with a hole in the centre, it was about 4ft deep and roughly 4ft x 3ft wide the entire cellar window was down the hole, the window didn,t open though. The 4 houses on our block were the same.

Thank you Bob and Jan,it looks like the pub at Pleasant View/ Derby Rd (135)was the Farmers Arms, and the one at Sandy Lane/ Derby Rd (209)was the Grapes, the building that was the Farmers Arms was not destroyed in the blitz and i am sure that it later became the offices of the T&GWU, one of the forum members (Suze) resided above the offices until the demolition of the area, once again thank you for for putting the past into view. I've had a closer look with a magnifying glass at my grandfather James Lynch's death certificate at 29 Ivanhoe Street. I think the occupation could read bricksetter, and not beerseller. Very sorry about this. So I'll concentrate on my great grandfather's entry on the 1871 census which very clearly reads beer seller, and he was living at 113 Derby Road I see there was a pub, thanks Jan, called the Old House at Home at No.111. Perhaps this ran across two building numbers.
Was there ever a pub called the Clock in the area, as my father used to speak of a pub of this name ?
