There's a postcard for sale on e bay of a fire at williams toffe works 1905.
When I saw it i wondered what the smell had been like, very sweet or sickly or what.
The bidding starts at £29.99 I think that's one for Rockefeller.
Go into ebay.co.uk and type in Bootle postcards and you will see it.

Here is the picture, if you want to see it. The Kids around there must have been in their element when they smelt all the Toffee on fire.

Bobhamo, I am almost drooling just looking at the packet.
Margaret, fancy not finding Thorntons, the smell of the toffee should have led you there. Kathy..

My first job when I left school was at Williams. Worked on the toffee making floor. My job was to keep the machines topped up with glucose(very heavy stuff) and condensed milk. Lasted one day. Arrived home covered in the stuff. Next day found a cleaner job as delivery boy at Irwins on Orrell Road. Much cleaner.

From facebook;
"The original founders of Williams's Toffee works were Tom and Henry Williams.
They decided to make toffee after experimenting with various other things, as they thought people would always want to buy more of a pleasant food.
The production started in various locations in a road parallel to Bold Street in Liverpool, and moved to Waterworks Street Bootle in about 1904.
Tom Williams died in about 1927 and Henry in about 1943.
Tom's son George, and my father James Craik Smith, who had been nurtured by Henry Williams, were both appointed Joint Managing Directors."
