I spent the best part of my life in Dodge (4 Chester Ave) - moved there from Flint St (off marsh lane, bootle) when i was about 7 and left for Australia when I was 22.
I used to hang about with Billy Coleman (Chester Ave), franny Fitsimmons (Cresswell Close) Tony Brand, Tony and Peter Mcloughlin( Hereford drive), John McCall (Chester Ave) and Peter (Teeny) Johnson
When to Our Ladies ( when it was the huts ) and then on to the Tommies .
Was in the first year when it opened.
What a great place Dodge was. . . Oh! must mention my brother Mally.
He would never forgive me for not adding him to this post - he stayed in Chester Ave till around 2000 - lots longer than I did
Remember the Johansons and Crannies ?

I remember Dodge before it was built. Used to be called the finch field. Bridle Road was a dirt road that had a gate on it,just after Ford Station. Big celerbrations when the 57A bus started to go down as far as Walmsleys. Only names I can come up with are Les & Norm Brennan, Pat McNiel and the Benson sisters.

I had a laugh when I read these posts. We lived on the Captains Lane estate. I remember all our parents telling us we could not go down Bridle to Dodge because it was 'dangerous'!!!. I thought there must be something terrible down there. Years later my Dad said they meant they didn't want us crossing the big main road because it was dangerous. Still not sure what was down there because I never ventured past the 'pleasure ground'. P.S, you still had to cross the road to get there , so can't figure that one out!!!!
Lived in Captains Lane, emigrated to NZ then Oz

I remember, when we used to watch the cricket on the Engy.
we used to hunt Tadpoles in the swamps at the back of the Engy bring them home watch them Grow to frogs and let them loose all over the estate.
I remember finding boxes of Wombles pencil tops on the Engy, nearly every kid in school had them,
You could write a book about what you did as a kid on Dodge, But we all got on and had fun.

I was about 14yrs when we went to live in Dodge, We had a skiffle group in the street with a tea chest for a base, a washboard, and a mouth organ.
I think Charlie Toole was the leader, .
My grandchildren are all musical but they had never heard of Skiffle and Lonnie Donegan.

Do me a favour and pop around to our old prefab, 127 Bridle Road. Right opposite the phone box. See if my grandmother still has the kettle on.mariie clifton 1955 wrote:Thanks for bringing all those happy memories back, i remember it all. I just had to smile to myslef when reading another post from dodgeoldgal about the womble pencil tops - I remember those too - not sure if they came from the Engy tho - although my memory is not quite so good these days lol - I seem to remember them coming from an old disused railway line which I know had a nickname but that has long since deserted the memory banks.
Dodgeold gal, what years were you at OLW ?
Some the names you mention I can recall - the Farleys had about 11 kids if I recall - Keith was in our year at school and his nickname was "fagger". I also remember the Burkes' although there were 2 lots of them - both at OLW - Pete Burke and Patricia Burke (no relation). Oh wow, the street partys and the trips to Blackpool - talk about a sense of community.
Can I ask Dodgeoldgal, whereabouts in Hereford Drive were you - I used to live at 147 (and yes, they were happy day). Conlo.

Hi Conlo,
I lived in 79 Hereford Drive, was in OLW 1970 - 1976
I remember the Burkes (Peter & Michael) and the other Burkes (Kathy Pat)
The Mc Evoys where another big family, think Gabriel still lives in the same house. the Carrisons, The Gormleys The Hogans and do you remember Mary Feet, She never wore shoes.
Do you remember when Smiths Crisps got robbed, and left all the boxes of Crisp on the Engy. all you could see was kids eating Crisp.
I Live in Australia Now. But i could write a book on Herefore drive and what went on, Such happy times. My Kids love it when I tell them stories.

Hi there dodgeoldgal (or is there another way in which you prefer to be addressed lol).
You must have lived at the end closer to the Bridle Road - the posh part lol !!
Una McEvoy was in my year at Our Ladys - I cannot believe that I am unable to remember a girl by the name of Mary Feet (with or without shoes) lol - but sadly I cannot. I do remember the Cunninghams, the Lambs, the Omalaynes, the Turners and the Walshes (Pauline Walsh in particular) !! All Hereford Drive stalwarts !!
I left Our ladys in about '73 / 74 then went to Tommies for 1 year.
I'm afraid I cannot recall the Smiths crisps factory being looted but it does conjure up an image of bygone times in Hereford Drive where all the kids played outside and had lots fo fun (even when they were eatign ill gotten gains).
Conlo

And those crisps were Bovril flavour, or if you were one of the unlucky ones you got the salt and shake. Smiths got emptied on a regular basis, there was not much else to do around here back then hehe.dodgeoldgal wrote:Hi Conlo,

I know Peter Burke, Pamela, and Tony ( he worked in Lockwoods)
I lived ( live) at the posh end of Salisbury , we called it posh because we lived closer to Pat Woods, the butcher, and the Mace shop

Does anyone remember a Disco at the back of the shops off Hereford drive, I think it was called the divvy or divie disco during the 70's.
