[quote="liverpool49"]Hey All
In the 50's (when i was a lad) my mum would clean things with some kind of reddish soapy stuff that came in a bottle and it was called 'Aunty Sally'.
Does anyone have any memories of this magic potion???

I remember well going to get Aunt Sally for my mum. We loved it as kids because it made a great bubble liquid. We took our own jar and the man would fill it up.

I can remember my parents using the bags of blue to dab on white walls to make a pattern...could not afford wallpaper in those days.

Wonderful smell Aunt Sally and best white sheets ever with the old Dolly Blue bag.
Who remembers taking the accumalator back to be charged up so we could listen to the radio. I can hear my Mum now saying, keep that jar upright or it will burn your clothes if you spill any. No mention of burning me !
Happy days. Sal

Aunt Sally was a liquid soap with disinfectant in, it was used to clean foors and walls some people used it in the washing but it was found it caused a skin rash.
It was made in a small factory in June st Bootle and other small factory's around Liverpool, Ken Dodd was a delivery man selling Aunt Sally from the back of a van before he became famous.
If you put it down grids and drains there would be soap suds everywhere. my gran would put Jays fluid down the drains it smelt so clean.

From Graces Guide. 1959 Chemical Manufacturers Guide.
Parr, George, Limited, 206 Stanley Road, Bootle, Liverpool, 20. Telephone: Bootle 3352. Telegrams: Parsantsal, Bootle. — Aunt Sally liquid soap, Parapine, disinfectant fluid, Parr's bleach.
Telegram address - a contraction of "Parr's Aunt Sally".
I'm guessing the red dye was added to indicate the presence of carbolic acid (phenol), which has anti-bacterial properties.
Lots of anti-bacterial products have been banned in the US and EU in the last 5 years.
Lifebuoy soap was banned in the EU in 2016 for being too harsh, though it can still be used on pets.
Dettol products were banned in the US around the same time because they contained triclosan and triclocarban.
The Red Cross still distributes carbolic soap in disaster zones to combat outbreaks of infection.

Where I lived as a lad on the prefab estate at Belle Vale, my mother used a similar liquid
called " JAXO ". She bought it , and other things like Chloros Bleach and pan scrubs from
a Morris van that visited the estate about once a fortnight. Does anyone else remember " JAXO " ?

It was Brook road Bob, the opening to it was opposite the prefabs. I lived on the corner of Bank road and Brook road. I can still picture the huge vats bubbling away and remember the smell.

I hope to have a bit more on Parr's history next week. Loved the thought Parr's Works being in Garden Lane.
