I am trying to find some information regarding a rail fatality. My mother in law, Sarah Hudson nee McCarthy of Flint Street, Bootle passed away at age 98 two weeks ago, and I am trying to piece together a family history for her daughter. I am trying to get some details about a fatality involving this lady’s grandfather, Charles Peter McCarthy, then living at Audley Street, Bootle. My mother in law told us that he had been killed in about 1922 between Marsh Lane Station and Bank Road, Bootle.

Hi Steve,

The incident must have happened around the end of October 1922, I have found Charles' death registration and his burial date at Ford Cem

Name:
Charles Peter McCarthy
Birth Year:
abt 1868
Age:
54
Death Year:
abt 1922
Burial Date:
3 Nov 1922
Parish:
Ford Cemetery, Lancashire, England

I am not sure what years the newspapers go up to on Findmypast, but I will have a look. There is the British Newspaper Archives online (a pay site) but again I am not sure what years they hold. It may be a case of a trip to the library to have a look at the newspapers on microfilm to find anything out. Or get a copy of the death cert which will confirm cause of death.

Name:
Charles P McCarthy
Birth Date:
abt 1868
Date of Registration:
Dec 1922
Age at Death:
54
Registration district:
West Derby
Inferred County:
Lancashire
Volume:
8b
Page:
430

Hope that helps.

Jan

Thanks, Jan, and thanks Bob. I sent off for a death cert yesterday. I may have to visit a library in Bootle next time I'm down from Newcastle.

If you're going to a library, Crosby Library are quite helpful. If you give them a ring they might even have a look for you!

Thanks Gaz. My wife's family are in Crosby, so easier for me to access. Much appreciated

I have now received a copy of Charles Peter McCarthy's Death Certificate.

Died 28/10/1922 at Bankhall Railway Station.
Aged 54 years of74 Audley Street, Bootle. Labourer at the matchworks.
Cause of Death:
"shock and haemorrhage due to injuries to right arm and right leg caused by being run over by an electric train on the 28th ultimo. But how he came tobe on the line the evidence is not sufficient to show."
Inquest held 01/11/1922.

Thanks for all your help.

If there was an inquest I would think there would be an article in the paper. That was the case with my uncle who got run over in 1921 and it gave details of how it happened. His report was in the echo, but he died in Liverpool.
