Good one Bob
I served my time with W &T Avery and the Weights and Measures office was next door in Great Crosshall St.
Incidentally, that is where I met my wife 57 years ago, she worked in the offices at Avery's.
Thanks for bringing back memories Bob.

Hi Bob
What used to happen was, the weights and measures inspectors carried their own standard set of weights. They used them to check that the scales or weighing machines being used to weigh the cargoes were accurate. Any weights (e.g. 56 lb weights) and scales were checked every 12- 24 months for accuracy, and they all had a lead insert which was stamped with the date they were checked.
Hope this makes sense
