Peter R sent this archive pic of local coal man called Mr Roberts delivering the coal in Bootle before we all went interweb.
Imagine the coal dust on your floor and carpets nowadays...
No wonder there was usually a hole at the front of the house where he would drop the coal into the cellar below.

What a hard job that was carrying those heavy bags up and down each entry plus lifting them off the lorry, same heavy job for the bin men too, bins full of ashes etc. no doubt a lot of bad backs in later life. He looks a cheerful soul!

The Coal Merchant is still a common site up our neck of the woods, I was fuelling up in a petrol station last week in Market Drayton and on the next pump was a coal man fuelling his truck.Silver-Haired-Hippy wrote: ↑Thu Apr 04, 2024 8:30 am What a hard job that was carrying those heavy bags up and down each entry plus lifting them off the lorry, same heavy job for the bin men too, bins full of ashes etc. no doubt a lot of bad backs in later life. We visited his yard in Woore and the amount of people calling to buy coal was surprising, there must still be a fair amount of open fires and dual fuel log burners for him to survive in business.
