Hi all, I grew up on queens rd, and I remember Liggets shop on the corner of Queens and Bedford rd when I was very young (turned 70 now ) strange shop in that it had no windows , bare floor boards , and was heated by one of those big concertina type radiators, but what I remember most was the overpowering aroma of spicy cooked meats,
I reckon it must have closed in the mid to late 50s, joe.

Love the top picture Bob, it shows that chap who time travelled and got himself a mobile phone!
Bottom right hand corner next the couple linking arms!
" arrr eh mam it's chocker down ere,no way that bus is getting up ere! I'll walk home"

just think what health and safety would say about that now it must have been a field day for a flies

Hi..I have looked at the photo of the carnival day a few times and can't help thinking
It's two photos merged together ...looking at the cleared land on the top right Ash Sreet was originally
The billiard room and the co-op store Wrights leather shop..and next Goodmans furniture/lino and carpet
Then the Metropole so looking at the crowd the clothing worn doesn't seem to be of the time
We all know the billiard hall and co-op were bombed but Wrights leather shop and Godmans were not
What I can remember bombed land Ash street corner then further along another gap that was the Metropole
That photo shows a large waste land that doesn't ring true to me....I lived in Ash Street 1937/1959....

Just read your post re 1938 street directory...............found a relative of my b.i.l. Mrs. Elizabeth Greggans still living 1 Ash St., - had her on 1911 living there!!!!!

Wow Bob..you have stirred a few memories there..there are about 8/9 families
I can't place..we lived in 23 it was late 70's when my Mum and Dad moved out
Alty's lived in Beech st but took Job Jones over when it changed hands Alec Alty worked there
I Think I can recall people all round those streets but not Cedar st for some reason..
Good neighbourhood. .happy days ..thanks Bob..wonder why that piece of land was vacant...

Hello Bob ..if the Metropole was not built till 1911 what was on the waste
ground ..do you have a census for 1901 do you know when Billiard Hall was built .

Thanks Bob for posting pictures of Ligg ets. .
I only remember the billiard hall on Ash Street corner going around to
Stanly Road then the Co-op. was next some more shops including
Wrights leather shop do you know what was on the opposit corner
befor the billiard hall?the other picture shows it vacant .it looked like
that after the war ..Pioneer shop must of been in the 1890s it was always
Liggets to me...thanks again Bob.
