Empress of Canada was my first ship, I did 2 trips in her-left to Join Empress of Scotland--That was 1951, I was Deck Boy, Massive pay 9 pounds a month,-I was In Buenos Aires on the "Elstree Grange" when we heard of the fire, when I came home I took a picture of her on her on her side--what a great shame.fatboyjoe90 wrote:I enjoyed that Nicolas, thanks for sharing it.

Great Photograph Nicolas-First time I have seen it.--I really am a hater all this modern day OH&S stuff -(Wont go further into it)-But I am surprised that MD&HB allowed people as close as this to the winching operation, should the hauling part of any of the cables parted the possibility that the flailing wire could have swept through these people with serious affect.nicolas wrote:

I well remember this fire. At the time I attended St Joans and from our classroom we could watch the smoke billowing up and the newsmen in aircraft flying around in circles. Very little study done that day. Another memory was of delving through the remains of the bits and pieces from the ship that had been dumped in the area where the container terminal now is located. Tried to drag a carly type float down to the river but it was far too heavy. Just as well. We would probably have drifted off to Angelsey.
