Thanks Nicolas. I remember the Arts and Craft Festival for the 1968 centenary. My Dad had to do the setting up and I went to help him. I caught a mouse on the Town Hall stairs and was on the way to remove it out the front door, when a very posh lady (Mayoress I think) asked me what I was holding so carefully. I showed her and she screamed. Got into trouble for that. Still had the same job when at Bootle Grammar on Breeze Hill. What fun. :D :D

And Norman's Chemist just in front of the Caradoc, they then moved the other side of the bridge to a couple of doors past the Winnie, on Rimrose Rd!

Hi Joe....That's a great photo of Balliol Road looking up from University Road in the direction of The Mons pub.

I noticed that Shelagh asks (in the same thread) whether the lone building to the extreme right would later become The Bootle Maternity home.

Well I have it on good authority (from my wife), that the building is in fact Quarry Bank school.......& that she knows that because she attended it....!!

Hope that enables a good nights sleep all around.

(Fab thread BTW)

P :-)

Hi Bob........Thanks for the photo.........this is obviously how the corner of University Rd & Balliol Rd looked before the new building in the colour photo was built.

I was referring to the black & white photo taken in 1910, & to the building on the extreme right of that photo being Quarry Bank school, on corner of Hawthorne & Balliol Rds.

I also meant to add (for Shelagh's benefit) that the Maternity home was where the Hugh Baird college now stands. (Ref' my wife again).

Hope this helps.

Cheers

hi filsgreen, I think the bottom of knowsely road is on the right and the caradock pub would be under the bridge ,if so I started my apprenticeship in a Robinsons factory next to the bridge in 1957. regards billy.

Circa 1905 Peter, I can remember when little shops like these when built, had shop owner accommodation above, and just
looking at the building in the picture it looks more than adequate!
Just think, no travelling to get into work, close at 1.00 o'clock, sit down for dinner, shut up at 5.00, put yer feet up, count the takings, Oh Heaven!

Hi I'm new to this site. I've been working on my family tree and my father side has never been explored. Have found out my grandmother was born in 1915 at 162 Marsh Lane, her father was an undertakers manager. Would love to know where to start finding old photos. We have none of this side of the family. I have seen your photos of Marsh Lane but realise it's a long road. Their property doesn't exist now, could have been lost I. The war and factories built there. I would like to trace their graves too. Any help appreciated as it's such a big site not sure where to look!!

Photo of Brasenose Road 1969 with Everton painted on the wall shows the last houses in Brasenose Road Bootle almost facing the entrance to Richmond Grove. I think the Duffy lived in the very last house with the Langton family next door then the Traynor family. The other photos of Brasenose Road are Kirkdale.
