Hi all,
been looking at some of the maps, on the site posted by Nicolas, a couple of years back! On one, from 1850, it denotes "Bootle" castle, which I've never heard of, but also on the map, there are other references to it, such as Castle view, and castle villa? It's position was near the river, a continuation of what is now Millers bridge, and where Brocklebank dock is now! Just wondered if anyone had any info'?

I noticed that as well Steve, and no Docks whatsoever! lovely big houses built there though, with their own
agricultural land and gardens, and possibly livestock -

I couldn’t find any photos of the Castle,(I know there are some out there) but I did find these very old photos of Bootle. :D :D

The North Shore , Bootle, L20 - 1843 As described in "Smith's Strangers Guide to Liverpool" in the year 1843
BOOTLE is a village about three miles distant, much frequented during summer months for sea bathing. The principal objects of attraction are the Church, which has two towers, the Water-works, and the Landmarks on the sands. :D

The North Shore Windmill, Bootle, L20 – 1843.

Morning Joe..so enjoyed the North Shore pictures of Bootle..wonderful sketches..thank goodness artists back then had foresight to do so..otherwise wouldn't have had a clue what the area looked like back in mid 1800s..thanks for posting :D

Bob..how lucky we were to have two local hospitals within easy reach..Bootle and Stanley..
visited both many times..also had a fever hospital next to Bootle cemetery!
How times have changed..all the way to Broadgreen, Fazakerley or Whiston now!
Not a patch on the old hospitals...(disorganised and littered with drunks and druggies now) so depressing, having to visit hospitals of today :(
Great photo of Oriel Rd Station, just been showing son and friend,,they couldn't believe how impressive it looked, telling them about the chocolate machine on the platform :D couldn't leave that machine alone, always hanging around it..even with no money :D
The old Richmond sausage factory..lots of locals kept in employment (not bad money either)
Makes you wonder how and when everything changed :?
Thanks for photos Bob.. (Grateful To Our Local Historians) :D

Bob, thanks for the picture of Richmond sausages. My Aunty Doris used to work in the office there. Sorting the pay If I remember correctly. I have always gone for Richmond sausages ever since.
Thanks also to Joe for the lovely pictures of Bootle beach. :D
And all the other people who are clever and kind to post photos.

The photo on " I remember it well" I used to work in the Woolworths shop when I was about 16 ish, and one day I had to stand in for the window dresser as she was off ill, and glad to say, I was congratulated on doing a good job, didn't get a pay rise though and back to the sweet counter!! :D Thanks for putting it on Bob.

Great Joe.. lovely old pics; large number of females working in shell factory 1917..
Tramlines being laid in Selwyn Street (another time in history captured)
Lovely pic of Braemar street.. the design of these buildings very unusual, small flats maybe!
Thanks for posting Joe!

Thanks Bob for the Irwin's photo (loved those old shops with cool marble counters) can still smell the sliced meats :)
Five Lamps at Crosby road not changed except for traffic!
Hawthorne road changed a bit but still recognisable :)
Thanks for all old pics Bob!

Good seeing the old baths again.. the place where I also learnt to swim..
Photo depicts the boys pool..a place we were not allowed to enter, except when it was mixed bathing of course...
Can remember our children competing in diving comps and school galas in that pool..all so exciting, they were great swimmers..always won something....a bit sad looking back at photo now..makes me feel terribly old :(
The five lamps picture makes me chuckle...when grandson was little, he was convinced statue on lamps was his mummy..took a few years to convince him it wasn't! (a good likeness though) :D
Thanks Nicolas
