Just found this picture of Southport Road, looking towards Bootle, on the Picture Post website; I don't know whether it's been out on here.

Wow, I lived near there. That is Hatfield Rd on the left and Simon Mahon's house, first on the straight after the road. Thanks Phil

I wonder why they called it the banjo when it was really the Pembroke Hotel maybe someone or people played their banjos and that is the nickname people then called it

Possibly to do with the shape of it Henry? Almost round - like the body of a banjo?

My grandfather Christopher George STARKEY lived at 49 Strand Rd in the 1890's and early 1900's before he came to Australia. I don't suppose anyone knows what street numbers are in the photo.

Henry, It is now a B and B. I have stayed there several times and very reasonable too.The landlady/owner told me that it was called the banjo, because from the air, it had the same shape as a banjo.

You're right Lily, looking closely I can see the fashion of the day! Note the Kiddies sitting on the wall, right hand side -
what a happy day that must have been!
