Thanks a million for the photo of Kelly's Bakery.

My mum (who's 91!) worked there on Saturday mornings for years. She occasionally helped out at their other bakery on Walton Rd.

I used to go to the Gainey on Saturday mornings and it was my job to pick up the meat pies and fairy cakes. I was given 2 bob and I had to get some chips on the way home for what we called "dinner" then, but would be called "lunch" now. When mum finished at 1 O'clock. there'd be pie and chips waiting for her when she came home.

I recognise the lady, but I can't remember her name. Perhaps someone could help us out with this! I know that she also worked there for many years.

I'm sending it to my brother who'll be gozzy eyed over it!

Unfortunately, my mum's too ill to appreciate it, but I sure do!

Thanks again for bringing back so many happy memories.

Best regards

Mike R

Mike that lady was instantly recognisable before I noticed the signage. I always thought she was Mrs Kelly.
A regular job for me on Saturday mornings was to run along Knowsley Rd for 2 dozen "barmies" so Ma could make sausage sarnies for us all (including visiting married brothers).
Sheila Bray/Gowan will probably be able to tell us the lady's name if she looks in.

Thanks Keith for posting these pics.

Bee - Talking about "Sarnies" I remember my Mum opening every sardine and taking their
innings out which I was under the impression that was what you were supposed to do and
so, have never really bothered with them - thought them too fiddling to mess with! :D

Keith - They are indeed lovely photos, could you tell me if Margaret Avenue is a road at the bottom of Harris Drive?

Yes! I too recognised the lady immediately, before I did the shop, I was never out of that shop "Kelly's" loved their Jam Turnover's, my mother wouldn't buy her bread there though, said the baker, who was alway's standing outside in "Eliot Street" with a ciggy in his hand, turned her off, cann't understand why?? still think their bread was lovely ha!!
