Hi Vinny
Thanks for the photo. this must be an early one. Is that the Bryant and May match works wall on the right of the picture.
It is also before the days of the trams. My recollection is that there was a tram stop and later a bus stop outside the mission at the bottom of Bowden street.

My Great Grandma on my Dad's side Emma Chapman died in the Ante Room of Walkers Mission on 09/05/1920
her husband William Henry having signed the Tee Total Pledge.
They lived at 12 Violet Road which is just opposite, down to the right behind the two boys sitting in the bottom right of the photo.
Their Daughter Ellen Chapman of 12 Violet Rd showed on her Marriage Certificate of 26/03/1928 to John Charles BORN
that she was a Match Factory Machinist.

My dad recently joined OPERA there (no 'opera'!) Great for meeting new people (including link for that too)

The original Linacre Mission was founded, in 1898, in a two-up two-down in Langton Street, by Mrs Elizabeth Walker and her son Albert James Walker.

Attendance grew so In 1900 a building to house a congregation of 500 was built on Linacre Road.

The building soon proved too small, so on September 30 1905 a new hall was opened to house 1200.
