Remembrance Sunday Projects
Posted 02 November 2015

A range of unique activities organised by Sefton Council's parks team are being launched as part of Remembrance Day, to commemorate the lives of those lost in conflict.
Working with local schools and community groups, individual waterproof poppies are being made to each represent a solider on the memorial plaques in Sefton. These will be used in displays on Remembrance Sunday, as an interpretation of the Tower of London Poppies art installation that is coming to Merseyside.

Students from Olsen House School in Crosby will be refurbishing the benches in the Alexandra War Memorial in Alexandra Park. They will be spruced up and a theme of windblown poppies will be designed into their surfaces alongside some poetry.
On Saturday, November 7, Sefton Council is teaming up with the Friends of Alexandra and Coronation Parks to hold a poppy making session at Coronation Park Pavilion. The activity will take place from 2-4pm and is completely free of charge. All materials will be supplied but the teams are looking for donations of large and small empty plastic drinks bottles.

In addition, memories from the War told by local residents have also been captured as part of the Lost Voices project. Volunteers have worked with Sefton's Library Service to record the individual stories and experiences of people during World War 2, which can be found online at sefton.gov.uk/lostvoices.
Councillor Ian Moncur, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: "We're delighted to be working with the local community on a range of special initiatives and finding new ways to remember the sacrifices that people have made for our freedom.
"Many people from the local area have served in the armed forces and have given their lives during times of War and conflict, and it is important that we remember them.
"With the Tower of London poppy display coming to the region, featuring a cascade of thousands of ceramic flowers at St George’s Hall in November, it is sure to be a special year of remembrance." 8)
Cheers Joe.
