Hi
I am trying to find out more details about a Gladys Jones/Pearson (nee Quinn) She had the corner shop on Warton Street. Her first husband was a fireman and killed in the Xmas blitz bombing at Gladstone docks (Gwynn Jones). She then married Jim (George) Pearson.
From my father Alan Pearson (Gladys son) I understand that most of the family came from the Bootle area, I would love to find out the name of the shop and any old pictures.
We have no picture of Gwynn or any of the Quinns, who lived on Grey street......any pointers would be appreciated

Hi Allie,
I'm pretty sure that your grandmother was my mum's best friend from childhood; I knew her as Auntie Glad. She was smiley and always had her lippy on :D I think she was tall like my mum but then all adults are giants when you're a little kid!
They were pals throughout their days at Gray St school which in their day was primary and and senior school. The school moved to new premises and was renamed Thomas Gray Primary many years ago but the old building stood until very recently. You'll find pics of it's demolition on this site somewhere - Bob Hammo and JD Dry may help with that.

Mum and Auntie Glad saw much less of each other after the mid/late 50s when the Pearsons moved to Netherton (Hereford Drive?); no one had cars then. As i wasn't born until 1950 I don't recall much but I do remember her living in Warton St and mum going to visit her after she moved. Although I don't remember a son named Alan I do seem to recall a son named Geoffrey? and was it two daughters? Don't remember ever meeting them as they were a fair bit older than me.
I remember Jimmy Pearson more as he had an allotment in Litherland near my dad's so I occasionally saw him into the 1970s. Think he also worked at the English Electric like my dad? Seem to recall a spot of rivalry over the flower shows there

As to the shop .... the one on the corner of Warton St and Warton Terrace was always the Parker's shop in my childhood days so perhaps it was your family's prior to that. Again Bob Hammo would be your best help with pics of that area as well as perhaps looking up the street in his directories.

Hi and welcome Allie :D as Beej has said Bob is the best for photos etc he helps enormously in the respect, from the 1939 registers I found the following::::

32 Warton Road Bootle

Gwynn Jones dob 29/3/03 occupation Dock Labourer (heavy) additional information member number 86605 Auxillery fire service Docks section.

Elains (sic) Jones (Pearson) unpaid domestic duties dob 18/3/1912 NB the Pearson would have been added later after her marriage as these records were used to enable the new NHS in 1948.

One other person but due to 100 year rule record is closed. Hope it helps a bit, kind regards

The CWGC lists a different address in Warton Road on his record::

Age:
38
Regiment/Service:
Civilian War Dead

Reporting Authority:

Additional Information:
Fireman, A.F.S. Son of the late E. and O. Jones, of 14 Croxteth Avenue, Litherland; husband of Gladys Jones, of 36 Warton Street. Died at North-East 1, Alexandra Dock.

I would think that the number 36 Warton would be the more likely address for a shop due to location and size a photo can be found on this link::

Well done Lily that's what was the Parker's shop in the 1950s. So your findings confirm it was Auntie Glad's prior to that. The road/path to the left lead to Warton Terrace which had a row of terraced houses.
What surprised me is that the shop was #36, I'd have assumed it was #1 as it's the first on the left as you enter the street. At the other end of the street (where presumably #1 is) is the railway line and a wide passageway so effectively a dead end.

Hi Everyone

Sorry for delay we have been on our hols. :D
Thank you all for your help. You are all right. The shop was on the corner and Gladys was a happy smiley lady who never had a hair out of place.
Geoff was Alan's older brother, he passed away 20yrs ago now.
The Jones lived at 32 Warton St and Gladys then met Jim and they moved to the shop.
It us lovely to hear from people who knew them and I will pass this onto Alan x
