Hi everyone,
i am doing my family tree and am stumped as to where and when my great grandfather from my fathers side, charles joseph conlon was born. According to my grans birth cert he was a private in the 7th kings liverpool regiment. I know he married jessie hanagan may 20th 1901 and was a carter, lived at 27 bolton st. I am also aware that his father was william henry conlon who was a mucician by profession but this is all i can find. It would be nice to know if charles had any sibling and also if possible his mothets name aswell as where they all came from. I have been stuck for some time and would love to trace my family further back. My dad and his siblings (mckevitt) live in marsh lane, their mother agnes conlon was born/lived in windsor road
if anyone could help in anyway i would really appreciate it.

Hi and a warm welcome to the Forum :D

I have located some WW1 pension records which I will copy for you should you like them, in short the information is enlisted Kings Liverpool regt 18/8/1914 and discharged due to no longer being fit 16/9/1915 POB St Leonards Bootle wife Jessie Conlon nee Hanagan married at Liverpool 21/5/1911(this is incorrect as I located the marriage cert) address on enlistment16 Windsor Road Bootle children Charles, Patrick, Jessie and it looks like Maria?. He is listed as 5'7" weighed 123 lbs had brown hair and was listed as Roman Catholic.

I will have a look further back in time back later

Hi I located another couple of marriages of what are likely siblings of Charles in particular that of Mary Ann Conlon to Charles Rutland also in 1901 she lists her address as 27 Bolton Street which is the same I think as on Charles' she lists her father as William Henry Conlon occupation soldier. Don't be bothered by that occupation as many soldiers were bandsmen or such in those days. Will have to look further afield now as if he was in the army he may have missed the census' .

Great finds Lily & Tina.

I tried to find Charles & Jessie and some of the children on the 1911 census, no luck, but I did find a Jessie Conlon 1911 census in Walton Workhouse, status married age 29, 4 children born 3 still living, I couldn't find any of the children, Charles Joseph born 12th August 1902, Jessie 20th August 1905 (dates of birth on Charles' army papers.

I have been trying to locate the two Bolton Street that were in Liverpool, one off Copperas Hill and the other in Edge Hill, couldn't find the Edge Hill one on the 1901 census, but it is on the 1901 street map, now thinking back to where Charles got married (Liverpool St Simon) I think that was in St Vincent Street, near Copperas Hill.

I did find the Liverpool Bolton Street (near Copperas Hill) in 1901 but nobody by the name of Conlon living at 27 Bolton Street.

Well done Jan, I saw the workhouse one and looking at it again I think perhaps Jessie may have been in the hospital section as after going through all of that record 100's there seems to be no sign of the children in with her as would be the case if she destitute.
I looked at the Hanagans in case they were with grandparents or other family but no luck as yet. Can only think that the name is mis transcribed. There is a death record for a William Henry Conlon back later with details.

Lily and Jan thank you very much for your help. :)
My next move is to order some certificates. I was wondering though is it easy enough to trace relative from Ireland as the majority of my family, both sides, seems to come from Ireland at some point. I also want to continue to see how far back I can trace the conlons

Hi Sam,

It is getting a bit easier to search Irish records on line now, more and more records are becoming available.

I found this

Area - DUBLIN (RC) , Parish/Church/Congregation - ST. JAMES

Marriage of GULIELMUS CONLAN of SHIP STREET BARRACKS and JULIA WOODS of JAMES ST on 16 February 1871

Husband Wife
Name GULIELMUS CONLAN JULIA WOODS
Address SHIP STREET BARRACKS JAMES ST
Occupation N/R N/R
Father PATRICIUS CONLAN JOANNIS WOODS
Mother N/R N/R
Further details in the record
Witness 1 G FINLY GULIEMUS
Witness 2 MARGARITA CONWAY

I think NR means not recorded

I found the info on this site http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 32d0445158

I am sure that Irish civil registration began in about 1854/55, so anything before that, it would be a case of looking through parish records, but a lot of Irish records were destroyed in a fire about 1922.

Hope that helps.

Thanks again Jan.
I would like to order charles' birth certificate and the possible marriage certificate of William henry as I am not sure that he would have got married in 1871 if he had a child born in the November, maybe child was a honeymoon baby. How do I go about ordering the irish certificates as I would like to get William henry's birth certificate too.
