Very Happy

I think we can rule out Edith Maud marrying her cousin, I think she married George E Langley in 1895.

She died 1st April 1904 and was living at 45 Edleston Rd Crewe.

Just logged on to have a look at developments over the last couple of days. Wow! feeling a bit stupid for lingering at that graveside several days ago. I suppose this just goes to show you can't make any assumptions until they have been proved 100% correct. So, Edwin dies in an asylum in 1930. This is intriguing. The first thing that occurred to me was that Edith was unlucky to have had two husbands die on her! Then I wondered what happened to Edwin. He is a successful solicitor, comes from a family which is already affluent with the timber business, marries into even more money in 1923, lives in just about the nicest part of Blundellsands, is captain of Bootle CC in 1926, yet by 1930 he is dying in an asylum in Kent. What went wrong for him? You know what they say - money doesn't buy you happiness. I must say when I saw the photos of him in the cricket team he looked as if he had the troubles of the world on his shoulders.

Do you think the hospital now located elsewhere will have any records about his death?

Also, I will have to write to the contacts Jan gave me again. I assume we have the right Johnson, just got the wrong date of death. I haven't heard from them yet - they were probably confused by the fact that I'd got some of the story wrong the first time I wrote.

There is a death for Alice Vera Goodburn registered in Newport 1980 DOB 26 Jan 1903.

Morning All :)
Yes Jan, Alice V did marry Geo Goodburn.
I've had reply from contact, what a lovely lady!!
Alice V lived most of her life in Waterloo, Oxford Rd and had children.
1938 Directory Geo is a clerk & they are at 3 Gordon Ave Waterloo.

I was right about Edith Maud, she died from T.B
Husband went to Canada, he died there also from T.B.
George's body brought back & both of them are buried in St Lukes graveyard with Alexander.
John Mowbray Langley had 11 children, he joined the R.N after school, served in the Battle of Jutland, HMS Tiger.
He was also on the ship which brought Shackleton's body back to Sth Georgia.
(perhaps took the body to a burial place as he died in Sth Georgia buried there at his widows request)
Merchant, Hi
Contact would like to know if Alexander & Edwin snr also attended Merchant Taylors please, for her family profile.
Yes, for all the wealth amongst all the members of the combined families, they certainly had a lot of sadness.

Hi Jan :)
Interesting Obit about Alexander in the Mercury.
I can't manage to copy/paste it.
Please could you have a look, it's Sat June 3rd 1893.

It appears Alexander was a very fit and active man who had a sudden and painful liver disease.

Tks

Thanks so much Jan, I really felt his obit needed posting here.
He was well respected, intelligent and worked his way up to earn respect.
Aside from this, he obviously was a fit and well man.
Perhaps he played cricket too??
Maybe liver cancer as he was in a lot of pain & died within 7 months.
Just guessing.

Hi folks, the most exciting news this morning and just what I had been hoping for. Got a phone call from Thomas Sands Johnson's granddaughter. She was so pleased to have been contacted. She confirmed that she did not know Edwin therefore he must have died in 1930 as we had most recently concluded. She actually said that she had no idea that her grandmother had married twice. She was very interested in the cricket aspect and is a member at Hampshire CCC. Most brilliant of all, however, is that she told me her brother lives in Formby and when she rang him to say she had got my letter he said he knew all about Edwin and will be able to give me lots of information. He is going to contact me soon and we will meet up to talk about it all.

So, thanks to all of you for working all this out for me. I am so thrilled that we have been able to get right to the finishing line with Edwin - after all those twists and turns and a couple of dead ends. I will of course keep you posted about what I discover when I speak to the gentleman in Formby.

Merchant.

p.s. to answer the question about whether Alexander and Edwin senior went to the school - I'm not sure. If they did it would have been before 1878 when our full written entry records begin. I will ask my colleague who keeps all the ledgers to have a check. 1878 is the year the school moved to its present site.

Thanks a million Jan, TS, Lily, Glossy and everyone else who has contributed or just shown an interest. As well as all the posts on this the thread has been viewed by loads of other people too. I hope you've all enjoyed the journey. Looks like you are all still piecing together more bits of the wider jigsaw of the family too.

I'll let you know.
Thanks for info re Merchant Taylors' re Alxndr & Edwin, will pass it along.
She did say that John Mowbray Langley may have also attended the school, next time you look at registers. Thanks.

You're right G.B
It's great team work that makes the difference!

GRU contact said John Mowbray Langley went to visit George Alan in Chicago at the time of the St Valentines Day massacre 1929.
George was an officer with the Harrison Line & a Temperance man
(not too popular with Al Capone & Co hey??)
George never return to England.

Back on page 2 we have Lois (d/o Clara) who married John B Hepburn.
1938 Directory
John B Hepburn & Co Ltd

we haven't looked for Alxndr & Edwin's bro Wm H, the PLUMBER!!

Lovely Sunday everyone :D

I won't pursue Wm Hy as he had no offspring.

Alexander's two sisters died.
Eliza aged 24yrs and Mary J aged 41.
They are buried in Sefton churchyard.
With them is Alexander's daughter Ethel aged 9 months.

With all that happens, you often see a couple of oldies like Jane & Joseph survive it all, they are also buried with the above.
1891 census
he's 81 & she's 79 at Sandy Rd.
He's a retired gardener, so hard graft didn't do him any harm.
Jane dies aged in 1898, Joseph 1893 aged 83yrs.

See Merchants post 24.2. re death of Herbt H Johnson

1938 Directory
Herbt H Johnson 15 Ilford Ave Gt Crosby
no occupation listed.

In the same post there is a mention of Henry Holme Johnson schoolteacher who is still at 22 Ilford Ave in 1938 Directory.
He was the son of the Edwin & Harriet that Jan had found on page??
There was a widowed Aunt Jane Holme with them.
I think I need a cup of G.B's coffee

Hi everybody - thought you might like to know that I have been in email touch with two of Thomas Sands Johnson's grandchildren. Both were very interested and willing to help. Apparently Edwin was in failing health for some time and in 1927 went to Australia to try and recuperate, accompanied by his stepson. (Are they on any passenger lists?) He died not long after returning, as we know in 1930. I'm not sure whether they knew where he died so I told them about the Cassel hospital and I will await a response on that. I have asked them to give me any further snippets on Edwin and whether their father or grandmother ever told them anything about him.

In the meantime I see you have been busy trying to trace more direct descendants through Edwin's siblings. I need to spend some time updating my notes just to comprehend all that.

Also been in touch with Crump family - see other thread.

Thanks again, Merchant

Good news Merchant!
My contact said the Johnson offspring are still very much involved in the business today.

Ada Hannah Johnson (see 1911)
1908 died 1927.
buried at Sefton.

Interesting Thos B.S Johnson arriving from Buenos Aires with his wife, married her in the same part of West Riding that Edith came from!

Undated photo of Cassel Hospital where Edwin died
